All About Dreams – A Martha Jette Column

Feb 13, 2007

Martha Jette, friend and author will now be taking over the dreams column formerly presented by Parthena Black of Bella Online.  Many of you know Martha and will agree that her columns are always fresh and exciting.  Martha explains the unexplainable with style and grace.

 Dream Interpretation: Part 2

When you are trying to interpret your dreams, remember that you need to consider all the symbols and images, not just one. Since the dream stems from your own brain, you must also realize that dreams are very personal to the individual.

A) Light: This is a sign that new insights are coming into our conscious mind.

B) Bright Colors: Being suddenly bathed in bright colors indicates you may be on the edge of a new perception. Jung felt bright colors were a precursor of a “grand dream” – one that springs from the mass consciousness.

C) Wrong Number: Repeatedly getting a wrong number or receiving an e-mail error message indicates you may be having difficulty communicating with someone important in your life or loss of intimacy with a partner.

D) Family Quarrels: This is a rather strange one. A quarrel with your parents symbolizes doubts about your religious faith, whereas a quarrel with children represents the loss of parental ambitions.

E) Fixing Something: Dreams of repairing something symbolize a real-life relationship problem.

F) Birds: Those that are predators represent the threat of adultery, while gentle, sweet-singing birds suggest reconciliation or the need to repair a troubled relationship.

G) Flames: These mean strong feelings, such as love, hate or anger, which may indicate a need to resolve some conflict in our life. Flames also give off light, which serves as a symbol of self-knowledge.

H) Spider Web: This symbol in a dream represents your insecurity about personal relationships and/or that you feel the need to escape from a current relationship. A more modern interpretation is that you may be trapped in the world of the Internet – a worldwide web.

I) Explosions: This interpretation likely comes from Freud, but dreaming an explosion refers to an orgasm that leaves you with a sense of well being.

J) Plane Crash: If you are afraid of flying, the meaning is obvious. If you’re not and you’re a woman, dreaming of a plane crash represents rape or being afraid of it. If you’re a man, seeing a plane crash and burn is equivalent to feelings of impotency.

K) Making Love: If you dream of lovemaking with your partner, the meaning is obvious. Otherwise, it indicates an intense desire for creative expression.

L) Purses: A purse in a dream represents the female genitalia or womb. If the purse is open, a woman gives freely of herself; if closed, she is withholding her sexual favors. An empty purse may indicate a desire for more material things or the loss of a loved one through death, divorce or other means.

M) Powerful Phenomena: Images of a volcano eruption, a dam bursting or the like tells you that you are about to explode over something and indicates a need to talk about it. On the positive side, such images may indicate a powerful release of creative energy.

N) Frustrating Tasks: If you find in a dream that you are frustrated over everyday tasks at home or at work, it indicates you may be in need of a lesson in humility for an overblown ego.

O) Trains: To Freud, trains represented a phallic symbol. Missing a train may indicate sexual frustration or lack of intimacy with your partner. Watching or sitting in a stationary train represents frustration in a relationship that seems to have no direction or simply going nowhere.

P) Trying to Find a Parking Spot: This dream represents an inability to find your true path in life.

Q) A House: This symbol represents a place where we get away from the outside world to live our personal lives. A dark, cold or empty house indicates feelings of loosing the warmth and love of those we care about.

R) Locked Out: Being locked out or unable to find your keys indicates an ability to move forward due to some major loss in your life, such as the death of a loved one.

S) Heaven: Dreaming of heaven, with God, angels, etc. symbolizes your quest for spiritual or religious truth. However, if you find yourself standing before God on a throne, you may have to consider some of the negative aspects of yourself.

T) Jesus Christ: (Buddha or other religious figure) Seeing Jesus in a dream indicates your desire for inner peace and as you might have guessed, dreaming of Jesus on the cross symbolizes life, death, resurrection and salvation. You are most likely to have this kind of dream when you are suffering some physical or emotional crisis, or are near death.

U) Virgin Mary: Seeing this figure in a dream indicates your own desire for purity, compassion and grace.

V) Angels: If you dream of angels, you need to consider the attributes given to them in the Bible. For instance, if you dream of the Archangel Gabriel, who told Mary she would have a child, you may be on the verge of a spiritual transition. Angels in general a heavenly messengers bringing the word of God.

W) Eagle: Seeing an eagle soaring across the sky represents your own spiritual aspirations. If it suddenly falls to the ground, be forewarned of pride that could get in the way of your spiritual progress.

X) Velvet: Any soft and/or luxurious fabric represents the comfort of home and affection of loving parents. This may indicate your desire for more comfort and peace in your life.

Y) Weapons: If you dream about weapons, these represent male sexuality and power. If it is a knife, it could indicate an inner battle with dangerous desires. A gun, which Freud viewed as another phallic symbol, may indicate doubt about your virility.

Z) Quills or Pens: Yet another Freudian phallic symbol, especially if it is a quill dipped in an inkwell. However, most dream analysts view a pen as a symbol of masculinity. Jung viewed these items as archetypes of the Animus or the masculine attributes needed to complete a woman’s personality.
