Storytime Tapestry Newsletter The newsletter devoted to spreading love
and cultural awareness around the world. Beyond The Mirror – A Bill Allin Column What Is The Truth? (Part 6) [Caution:
What follows may be offensive to some people because it is based on fact,
reason and probability, not on an established belief set (religion). If you are
offended by anything that does not support your belief set, you should choose
to not read this article.] Where is
the truth about religion, the objective of this series? As there
is so much about religion that is more human opinion than universal fact, let’s
look at what we know to be fact to see if we can winnow some truth from it. The
facts may or may not support the belief sets of religions. We know
that matter and energy are the same thing, only in slightly different forms.
Remember e = mc2 where mass and energy are equated, with the speed of
light as the constant ‘c’? We know that matter and energy are interchangeable,
that they can and do change from one state to another naturally and can be made
to change with human influence (though we can turn mass into energy easier than
the other way around). We
know that the total quantity of mass and energy in the universe never changes.
One kind of energy--such as electricity--can be made to change into light
energy to illuminate our homes and operate our computers. Fusion or fission can
change atomic matter into energy. We haven’t yet figured out how to change
energy into matter efficiently because we still seek more energy to power our
modern lifestyle. Your
body and mine are composed of atoms, most of which are clustered into molecules
of matter that comprise the stuff that make up our bodies. We know that when
corporeal bodies die, their substance decomposes by means of bacteria and other
life forms that change what formerly was "our" matter into some
matter of their own plus some energy to keep their bodies operating. Conservation
of matter and energy. Nothing gained, nothing lost in the universe when we die
in terms of matter and energy. That
means that eternal life is provable by science. True, science doesn’t prove
that our post-human life form will be similar to our formerly human form, but
the fundamentals of most religions don’t teach that anyway. Some clerics may
imagine that to be the case and teach that way, but religions themselves do not
in their fundamental forms. Science
and religion are on the same page when it comes to eternal life (or existence).
Where they each take that concept depends on the imaginations of the thinkers. Bill Allin |
