Martha Jette Column Martha Jette, friend and author will now be taking over
the dreams column formerly presented by Parthena Black of Bella Online. Many of you know Martha and will agree that
her columns are always fresh and exciting.
Martha explains the unexplainable with style and grace.
Dream Interpretation: Part 3 Aside from the advice I’ve offered in Parts 1 and 2,
remember that dreams are very personal to you. It is important to take into
account what is happening in your own life with regard to such things as
relationships, friends, work, family, etc. I had a strange dream the other night about a neighbor,
Dorothy Zenert, who lived down the street from me when I was still living at
home. At the time, my adopted mom was suffering terribly from cancer and my
adopted dad was most often at work, golfing or away on business trips. When I
had some spare time, I would play with the neighbor’s daughter Shirley. In the dream, I was not back home, but living on another
street. When I looked out the window, I saw a woman being taken from a home
just down from me on an ambulance stretcher. She looked very, very old, but I
knew right away that it was Dorothy. I remember thinking that she must be
dying. The next thing I recall is seeing Dorothy in the same room
with me. She looked much better, but I knew she had passed over and I was
actually seeing her in spirit. She was thrilled to see me, as I was to see her.
Then Dorothy smiled and said, “Gentle Martha” and moved toward me for a hug. I
don’t remember actually hugging her, as that is where the dream ended. From that dream, there are several elements that I needed to
reference in order to figure out what the dream actually meant. These included:
neighbor, death, spirit, stretcher, smiling and hearing my name. Neighbor: denoting a person who may act out our own
fantasies, bringing more excitement to our otherwise mundane lives. Death: A symbol of the cycle of life, growth and rebirth -
perhaps a turning from material to spiritual pursuits. Also a reminder that
life can be too short for finding personal fulfillment. Spirit/Ghost: If it
is someone you know, it may represent unfinished business with that person. Name: Hearing your name indicates a situation where you may
be in the spotlight, such as a job interview, wedding, etc. I couldn’t find references for stretcher or smiling.
However, I think their presence in the dream is obvious. The stretcher to me
denotes sickness, which reminded me of my mother. Smiling meant she was happy
to see me, which is a very positive aspect. I should note at this point that Dorothy was a real homebody
and was always there for me when things got very bad at home with my mom’s
illness. I often called on her for help and advice, since I was to put it
simply, too young to handle some situations on my own. For instance, one
Saturday, I got up and prepared breakfast for my mother. It was my practice, as
she had become bedridden. When I took the breakfast tray in to her, she appeared to be
sleeping. Though I tried to rouse her, I could not. However, she began moving
about and crying out in pain, which was extremely upsetting. I had to phone
Dorothy to understand that she was in a coma and I needed to call an ambulance.
Aha! Stretcher – ambulance! Now there is a big clue! It makes me wonder now, if I ever thanked Dorothy for
helping me that day or any other day I called on her. Perhaps, that is the
unfinished business. However, the woman seemed to be thrilled to see me, so I
think she was simply reminding me of that event so I’d know for sure who she
was. Dorothy would be in her ‘80s now and may very likely have
passed over. I am beginning to think that this dream was more of a message from
her than just an ordinary dream. So what was her message? “Gentle Martha!” I think she was trying to convey that she knows I was (and
hopefully still am!) a “gentle” soul, since I tried to take good care of my
mother from such a young age. What a wonderful gift to have her come into my
dream! Footnote: After this dream, I could not remember my
neighbor’s full name or that of her daughter. However, when I awoke the second
night, their names were right there in my mind! Dreams often bring solutions, if we relax and give our
problems over to them. If you have a worry or concern, think about it as you
are falling asleep and ask for a solution. This really does work. The other night, I received information upon awakening that
is the solution to something I’ve been working on. For a few weeks now, I’ve
been collaborating with a screenwriter to come up with a new book and
screenplay. We were doing pretty well, but there was a serious problem with the
storyline. Voila! I awoke the other morning with the solution! Here are some more dream symbols that you might find
helpful: A)
Royal Figure: This type of person in your dream
relates to parental authority. B) President/Prime Minister: Denotes a desire for a closer
relationship with a parent or the hope of being entrusted with a position of
responsibility. C)
Endless corridors/rows of desks/faceless
co-workers: These may symbolize the anonymity of the big city and working life
in general. D)
Stacks of Paper: These relate to the stress of
work and perhaps a desire to make a change. E)
Capitols of Government, such as F)
Tall Hat/Crown: This is another symbol denoting
the desire for authority or control. If you are fighting to keep such an item
on your head, it may mean you fear losing your current status. G)
Judge: If you are the “judge” it means you
appreciate your own wisdom and power of judgment. If you’re standing before a
judge as a defendant in court, indicates a feeling of persecution from an
authority figure(s) in your own life. H)
Feathers: If you find feathers fluttering down
in your dream, it represents a warm and loving relationship. I)
Hotel: Seeing a hotel in your dream suggests
that your personal relationship with someone is moving toward a new level of
intensity, intimacy and joy. Take into account, if possible, the view from the
hotel – for example, a peaceful scene or a rundown area. J)
Gold Dust: If you dream that gold dust or
jewels are running through your fingers, it indicates regret over a lost love
or relationship. K)
Explosion: As you might have guess, Freud
related this type of dream to an orgasm. If it was a good explosion like
fireworks, it indicates healthy sexual well-being. If it was an explosion
causing disaster, it may indicate a dark desire to dominate. L)
Red Rose: Being a symbol of love and romance,
this in your dream can relate to either the female sex organs or menstrual
blood. If there are thorns, this dream particularly for men may indicate an
ambivalent attitude toward women. M)
Unable to Understand: If you are being told
something very simple, but you just can’t understand the message, it implies a
serious communication problem in your life. The same holds true if you are
giving the message, but the other person just can’t understand it. N)
Ashes or Dust: These symbols in a dream relate
to “ashes to ashes, dust to dust” and imply the loss of a treasured person or
thing in your life. These might also relate to finally having closure about
something. O)
Dark, Cold or Vacant House: Experiencing this
in a dream indicates an intense feeling of loss. P)
Inappropriate Sadness: If you dream of a happy
event, but feel terribly sad, it indicates a need to stop being distracted by
life and attend to our emotional well being. For example, you may have suffered
a loss, but have not taken the time to grieve. Q)
Inappropriate Happiness: This type of dream
indicates that perhaps you are in a state of denial about a great loss in your
life in order to avoid the pain associated with it. R)
Being of Light: Any such dream relates to
spirituality and awakening. S)
Left Side of the Body: A dream focusing on this
relates to our darker side and may indicate feelings of misgiving toward
someone. T)
Right Side of the Body: A dream focusing on
this relates to our more positive side, denoting a sense of well-being or
optimism. U)
The Back: Seeing someone’s back relates to a
feeling having someone turn your back on you when you needed the person most.
If it is your own back it, it refers to the approach of old age, as in youth
turning it’s back on you. V)
The Heart: Since the heart symbolizes our need
for unconditional love, nurturing and emotional security, you must consider the
state of the heart. If it is good, you are feeling happy about those things. If
it is broken or oddly shaped, it may indicate your feelings of insecurity about
someone. W)
Hair: This symbol in a dream relates to a
woman’s own sensuality and power. To have your hair shaved off indicates a
sense of disempowerment. X)
Beard: If the beard is full and healthy, this
symbol relates to male virility. If the beard is white, it represents wisdom
and maturity. Y)
Blood: If you dream of gushing blood, it
indicates violent emotions or excessive self-sacrifice. Z)
Bones: Symbolize a need to strip a problem down
to its bare minimum in order to solve it. Broken bones represent your own
perceived defects, while a full skeleton represents death. Source: 1001 Dreams by Jack Altmann Martha Jette marthajette@yahoo.com
