Hearts and Humor – A Michael Smith Column
March
18, 2007
Hi, Gang. It's great to see all of you. What a crowd we
have now! It's amazing.
My last story talked about playing in puddles. That story
reminded me of an old story of mine. This is a humor piece
with a message - I hope.
Have you thought you had a good plan, only to have it
fail? Did you miss one small detail?
I have - many times. Tonight's story is proof.

Puddle
I stepped from my desk, looked out the window, waved
at a passing bus, and stared at the sky. The sun blinded
me. The clouds were gone. The wet pavement steamed. It was
time to go home. I was glad the rain stopped. I dreaded a
twenty mile drive in a storm.
On my drive home, I approached a section of highway
that always flooded. I could see the water in the distance.
An entire section of road was covered in what looked like
eight inches of water.
An approaching car hit the puddle. Water flew outward
in waves, as it plowed through. In the distance, I saw another
car approaching. Judging by our speed, I guessed we'd hit
the puddle at the exact same time. Using my limited brain
power, I decided to be proactive: I turned my wipers on. I
knew a blinding wall of water was coming.
We hit the puddle at the same time. We showered each
other in a wave of brown, muddy, and icy water.
My wipers did their job. I was momentarily pleased. I
anticipated what was to come. My plan was almost perfect.
I drove on. Water dripped onto my lap from my glasses and
face. One question repeated in my mind, "Mike, why didn't
you close your window?"

Hi Michael!
Your puddle memories brought so many back to me.
Although I'm almost 62 years old, I still make
trenches in the mud to watch the water flow into
another puddle.
My dog loves it when I do this because then she
has more time to sniff and since it rains quite a
lot here in the green state of Washington, it's
my favorite rainy day pastime!
Thanks for the memories! Hows your back?
Pat
