Showing Love
Kay Seefeldt
For God so Loved the World, He gave his only begotten Son. How can we
even begin to repay a love like that? Besides the obvious of loving
God and His gift to us back, we might consider taking a little better
care of the very earth He created and we live on.
Everyone can do something. A commercial for a local grocery chain store
claims to recycle over 50% of their waste. I also recycle our plastic
grocery bags at that store and buy the majority of my groceries there
as well. I appreciate the fact they are doing what they can to help
save our world.
At home, we recycle as many product containers as possible: glass,
cans, cardboard and other boxes, #2 plastics, newspapers, magazines and
catalogs. We add shredded papers to our compose pile along with waste
vegetable matter. Clothes and other items not wanted that are still in
good shape are donated to Goodwill. It pleases me that we keep our
debris for curbside pick up to a minimum.
Using less energy is a tough one for us. Living in a small Mine town,
we still have to drive to the nearest town to shop. When we do go, we
try to make it worth our while. We have substituted some of our light
bulbs in our home for the energy saving variety where they will fit or
work. We keep our furnace turned down a few degrees (though I complain
of being cold) and use lots of fleece bedding in the winter. Owning our
own wind turbine would be wonderful goal. If we didn’t have any wind, I
have an idea for something that might work...that involves my husband
and Saturday night baked beans! But I am not telling him that.
If we as a people stopped buying or drastically limit our use of
disposable products, maybe manufacturers would take the hint and stop
making junk that eventually ends up in landfills. I am very thankful
our state of Maine has a deposit on soda and beer cans as it keeps many
empties off the roadside and those that do get thrown out, are often
retrieved by people who make a few dollars in the process.
HGtv is promoting a campaign for making Mondays Green. Everyone can do
something. Even the simplest efforts matter. All of us together can
make a major difference. By doubling our efforts, we’ll be living green
everyday. Let’s show our love by being good stewards of the only earth
we will ever have. May God bless our efforts to make our world a better
place for our children and future generations before it is too late.

Kay awoke this morning with the need to write this piece and was
"prompted" all day until it was done. Since recently retired public
school teaching, she and her husband have been renovating their home
and also sprucing up a small summer place on her home town of Beals.
She enjoys writing in her free time...or which there seems even less of
since last June.
