A New Hire Story From My RED SOX !

Pamela Tyree Griffin

I do a lot of talking about the importance of properly welcoming new hires into organizations. I have often discussed the research I have done regarding the correlation between how companies indoctrinate people and the retention of those same people.

Now what does this have to do with my Boston Red Sox? Hold On-I’m getting to that. First let me say that this example may have occurred in other teams  - but I am writing about something I have observed firsthand.

My Boston Red Sox have two Japanese players, the newest of which is Daisuke “DICE K” Matsuzaka. Mr Matsuzaka, a gifted ballplayer, has spent considerable time as a professional  in Japan. He came to the Red Sox with superior pitching skills however he spoke no English.

How was this going to work? Well in my opinion, my Red Sox did a few things right:

  • Dice K is developing a relationship with Hideki Okajima, the other Japanese player. Manager Terry Francona is quoted as saying,” Okajima and Matsuzaka would probably enjoy having a compatriot on the team. I would hope that would be a help. When this is all said and done, the Red Sox are certainly going to make this as easy a transition for whoever’s here. We always do.”  (from various sources)
  • Dice-K was paired with two Japanese translators.
  • Pitcher Curt Schilling, Jason Varitech (catcher) and John Farrell ( he is the pitching coach I think) are all learning Japanese.

Let me tell you where I’m going with this:

  • First, someone hired the best candidate they could find based upon their qualifications for the position.
  • They invited the individual to join the organization.
  •  They found a mentor or two to help the new hire’s transition.
  • The new hire’s unit (team) finds ways to help acclimate the person and make him feel welcome. And they act kindly and professionally towards the person and towards one another.
  • All concerned continue to mentor and support the new hire and, as a result, the new person feels the decision to join the organization was a good one.

My Sox have done some other neat things in this regard but I believe you get my drift. I only ask that you think about this when the next new hire walks onto the field or, in our case, through the door…

Best,

Pamela

Time To Think

Bill Walker

missourisage@yahoo.com

I think it is best to take a little time to think about something before the great leap.  It is a little late to think about the pit falls of the great leap while falling in mid air. We see this about every day, also history is chuck full of fool deals that cost lots.

I remember an old fellow telling about major repairs on cars.  He said best after putting the thing back together, to walk away from it and think first if every thing is just right, before telling the owner to pick it up. Have you forgot a 2 dollar part, maybe you thought it wasn't needed, but that 2 dollar part might save a lot of money down the road.  Don't laugh, I know first hand, I was the owner.  The fellow said he didn't think a 2 dollar part was needed, just use the old hose.  The old hose couldn't take the heat, and blew, costing a whole new engine.

It would be best before making a great leap to see if the leap is needed.  Wars is one thing I am thinking about.  It is very easy to make the great leap into a war over something, hard to stop the leap in mid air.  It would have been much easier to have called Joe up, and said we have a problem. Let us set down together and reason things out. I think I have seen that ONE time in my walk on this earth. I remember the days of the Cuban deal.  We was one blink of an eye lid of war. Men of two countries talked, we side stepped what have maybe been a major war.

I also remember what a man said back in the Korean War.  President Harry Truman was having a problem with a certain general.  The certain general though he should be president.  We have had that before in American History.  I think President Lincoln had a few generals that thought any one of them should have been president. One even ran for the office, didn't get any where, but never the less he tried making the great leap.

Anyways President Truman asked a man what he thought should be done?  Truman was all set on removing the said general.  General Marshall, said no, let him have the papers and facts of the case, let him study the case close, over night.  The next morning General Marshall was at the door of the office of president. The words was' "FIRE HIM, should have been done long ago."   Now there was a few other words said. I think some of the Dollies are not use to those kind of words, so they will if would like to know them, go buy General Marshall's book.  General Marshall took the facts, the papers home, read them, and did some thinking.   He thought things out before telling the President to make the great leap.

Remember this, after you make the great leap, there is one thing about it. Got to live with it, can't change mind and turn in mid air, and go back.  The time to think is before the great leap.

Valley of Decision

Chris Hansen

Oh how great is our division!

Here and now is our valley of decision!

Bible yes?  Or, Bible no.

John and Mary? Or, John and Joe.

Something merely natural?  Or, someone who is Divine?

No purpose at all?  Or, intelligent design.

Do we exist after the tomb?

Are they merely blobs of tissue within the womb?

What about separation of church and state?

Disagreement? Or, speech filled with “hate?”

Equality for everyone?

Or, reward based on what you’ve done?

Errors in judgment?  Or, actual sin?

What kind of trouble are we really in?

Who exactly was Jesus Christ?

A great teacher, or the Son of God who was sacrificed?

What is truth?  Who gets to decide?

On what basis are we unified?

Is truth universally true?

Or, is truth something that merely works for you?

What exactly is the good?

Is it doing what you should?

Or is it merely the greatest pleasure?

On what basis do we measure?

We’d better decide, and do it fast!

If not, I doubt that we will last!
