Mary June----Mothers And Their Sense Of Humor--Elbow Grease?

Mary June Castle

I am smiling as I think of a trick my mom played on my sister. Yes, I am still on memory lane. They are good memories. We were cleaning the kitchen and my sister was complaining that there ought to be some real good cleanser that would clean with out too much work on her part. My mom looked at her and mentioned that there was. When my sister asked her what it was my mom told her it was called, Elbow Grease, I don't know how many of you know what that is but you sure can't buy it on a shelf.

Anyway my sister asked mom for the money to buy some and my mom just smiled at her and gave her some money. As my sister went down to the store my mom called the store and talked to one of the workers that she knew real well and told her just to play along.

So my sister was telling me later that the workers were real cooperative and told her what aisle to find it on and of course she couldn't find it where they said. So when she came up to the front they said that they must have sold out of it since it was such a good cleanser.

When my sister came back to the house I don't know how mom kept a straight face but when my sister told her they were sold out of it my mom told her that there was no way they could have been because each one of them had it with them as well as herself, my sister and I.

Talk about my sister and I have to admit I thought mom had lost it. Then she walked over to my sister and pointed at her elbow and said to put a little umpff in her cleaning and she would have elbow grease. She cracked up laughing as she walked away.

My sister and I just looked at each other and shook our heads. My mother the clown. She was doing things like this all the time. We had to stay on her toes since we didn't know what kind of joke she was going to do next. My mom the love of my life.

This I Believe # 26
Bill Walker
missourisage@yahoo.com

This I Believe; there are special days when something of importance happened. Like the day you were born, the day you got married, the day you died. Well maybe those might be remembered. I was thinking more on the lines of days that we should kind of remember.

I remember in high school a history teacher that was a nut on dates to remember. She had a list of 100 dates in American History, it was a must to know ever blasted one of them to escape her class with a passing grade. I can still remember a few, very few that is.

I think sometimes cramming of certain things is a waste of time. But by the same token one should remember things that happened, and a general time frame.

How can I forget certain days of things in my life time?
Dec. 7, 1941, May 8,1945, Aug 14,1945, Sept 2,1945, Nov 22, 1963. Sept 11, 2001. There are other dates that come to mind on the date back in history. Like my story June 6, 1944. I lived those dates, I do not forget. Some were dates of fear, some were dates of an unknown, some were dates of joy.

I am sure there are dates, family members remember. Getting the call, this is the War Department. We are sorry to inform you
......................................... I know one such lady who still remembers the date, what she was doing when she got the news her true love was no more. That time and place in history is written in stone in her mind forever. Her hopes and her dreams was gone on that date. A day she wished had never happened. There has been countless numbers of people over the years, and some still to come that are in the same boat.

We all have dates to remember, those dates are very important to them, but will not be to you maybe. I say this remember the ones that are of importance to you, leave the others for the history books. I see no need to stuff your mind with some things. Just be smart enough to go find a book on the matter, and read up when the time comes.
This I Believe.

 We Must Carry On

Cynthia Groopman

We must carry on, although the hours are lonely and the sky is bleak,
For amid the storm clouds, hidden inside the glowing rainbow, the voice of hope will speak.
We must carry on, marching strong and tall,
For God is blessing everything great and small.

Although we live in obstacle's troubled land.
We shall never fall, because we are guided by God's outstretched helping hand.
We must carry  on, smiling during a stormy time,
Being reassured that after the extreme darkness, we will bask in the warmth of the golden sunshine.
We must carry on, as God will shelter us from dangerous harm.
We  must carry on, with faith and a strong belief,
For with the ointment of love, God will soothe our aching hearts with comforting relief.

  Believe
Cynthia Groopman

Believe, I must,
Because my faith in Him is strong and in God, I shall always trust.
Believe, I shall do,
As He paints my life's sky a beautiful sunshiny blue.
Believe, I shall try,
And no longer shall my heart weep or my soul cry.
For as long as I believe,
All of my sorrows and fears dwelling in my aching heart and weary soul His comforting words will relieve.
For I shall forever believe,
In the promise of a better tomorrow, because the misgivings of the past, I shall never retrieve.

  Miles To Go
Cynthia Groopman

Miles to go, before I can touch the golden rainbow,
And to be caressed by its hopeful golden glow.
Miles I must go before I can see white doves sprightly dancing, as they fly,
In a beautiful clear blue sky.
Miles to go before I can be crowned by God's elation,
And once again victoriously triumph in mirthful celebration.
Miles to go before I can touch my Mother's gentle loving hand,
As I will be welcomed into God's eternal promised enchanted land.
Miles to go before the cruel beast of war,
Will no longer rant and rage anymore.
Although each mile is steep, and the road is long,
God's love, faith and courage, will give me in an encouraging song.

 What A Smile Can Do
Cynthia Groopman

What a smile can do, I ask you my friend,
well, a broken sad heart, with joy and gladness smiles can mend.
Kindling a candle that is so bright in a weary soul,
a smile can enliven a sad face with a golden glow.
What a smile can do is truly healing,
because smiles contain ingredients that are appealing.
A smile can light up a dark day,
and send happiness along the way.
A smile can cure any ill,
and it is not found in any potion or medication pill.
A smile can do so much,
accompanied by a kind word, a gentle embrace and a loving touch.
