July 29, 2007

Wonderful announcement, our Chinese columnist, Kun (Jastine) Leng will be coming to America, and sponsored by Vance Agee, we do need your help in making her acculturation a success.

I was going to say that I am disappointed that no one mentioned her column on Storytime tapestry but I see Vance that you have not forgotten.  I am going to send this out as a famous person, for the famous people column, because Kun is.

The Meeting of East and West
--- IN
BUFFALO and WNY? ---

Over a century ago famous British author, Rudyard Kipling, wrote: “East is East, and West is West, and never the two will meet….”  Never? How abysmal! How about in
Buffalo?

“I disagree, Mr. Kipling, and hope that many others do, also!” (Vance Agee, world traveler. Pro Temp retired educator and 2000 adjunct lecturer in diversity and multiculturalism at N.U. --  and Kun’s volunteer mentor.  She arrives from NYC at Airport Thursday, August 2 at
10:30 p.m.; needs a good welcome.

- - -

A young and brilliant addition to the Asian and Non-Asian Community of WNY is coming soon to study in the International Program at D’Youville College.
Buffalo, NY. She is about 18, stands 5’3”, has an honors 3.95 GPA from her college-prep. high school in central China, has at least a 1400 SAT average with some 740’s, knows Mandarin Chinese – and perfect English and French and German, has published a 300-page novel, writes for American web sites, has prizes in journalism, and incredible lists of various awards from journalistic to humanitarian!

According to Agee: “The most brilliant student whom I have ever known.” Her humanitarian work is a model to all of us. Kun Leng lives in an area of central
China which has several poor minority ethnic groups. They are poor and need economic and medical help but offer a rich cultural heritage, the Yi.*

“Once we all realize the wealth of information and insight which Kun Leng has for us about China and about special topics, I anticipate a never-ending list of speaking engagements”, Agee stated.

Kun Leng already has a group of friends anxious to teach her
America! Clothes, skirt lengths, shoes, makeup, hair color, activities! An interesting “transformation” which everyone is looking forward to seeing, including Kun! Michelle Rezebek, for example, a student at ECC, and friends, are ready to mentor Kun in “American youth civ”.! (That should be an interesting article, a “before and after”.)

A request:

A small group has formed a local/international “Friends of Jastine” (her pen name). We need friends to help by sharing their interests. She needs a church/church homes, help with her apartment and in finding a good part-time job, speaking and TV and radio invitations, and a nice airport welcome, etc.!

If anyone would like to join “Friends of Jastine”, please e-mail mentor: Vance Agee, vgagee@roadrunner.net asap! Send a jpg pic of you and friends and tell how you can volunteer to help! We also need community groups and business sponsors! She arrives Thurs., August 2,
10:00 at Airport fr NYC.

Oh, we need a TV station as of this writing!

XIE XIE (she-she = short “e”; “thank you”).

30 Volunteer Activities

(“These activities have not been officially recognized nor rewarded: I didn’t receive anything from participating in them. Perhaps nobody would ever know them, if I didn’t mention them. But they are not non-rewarding. Some might consider them insignificant, but I believe that they are memorable and worthwhile. Nonetheless, I cherish my experiences growing up in central
China and I believe that these activities will definitely become a significant chapter of my life.) I will continue my service.

1. I visit the underprivileged Yi villages once a week and give aid there.

From Leng Kun: Hello, Vance!
Thanks so much for your quick message!
I'll go to
Chengdu on the evening of July 16. I'll submit the visa fee at the China Citic Bank on the morning of July 17. Then I'll have a day off and get ready for the visa interview on July 19.
Loreto says he's happy to help me with whatever I need, but he didn't say he'd contact the State Department.
I'll appreciate it very much if you would send me a solid supporting letter. Maybe the visa officer will consider a bigger chance. Ah, actually I'm getting a bit nervous about the visa interview. LOL~I'll try my best!
Looking forward to hearing from ya quite soon!
GOod night!

Article by Vance Agee, neglected by the
Buffalo News to date, but will be used later. VA
P.S.
I met her on Storytime Tapestry!
