WALKING HOME

By: Joseph J. Mazzella

The home I grew up in as a boy had a river running along one side of it and a set of railroad tracks running along the other. Being just 10 feet away from the tracks sometimes scared my Mom. Our home consisted of two, old, shanty cars painted green and several rooms we built on ourselves. She knew that it would be crushed if any one of those 20 feet tall, railroad cars loaded with coal were to tip over on it. I never shared her fear, however, no matter how much those cars would sway as the trains went by. In my child’s mind the trains and tracks where a source of endless adventure and home was a place of love, joy, and safety that I could always return to.

In fact, I would often spend part of my summer mornings walking down the railroad tracks and back home again. It was a challenge to see how long I could walk on one of the narrow, steel beams without stumbling off. It took me a while before I discovered that the trick was to never look at your feet. As long as I kept my eyes on that old home of ours I never fell off. I would walk for hundreds of yards with thoughts of my Mom’s tender smile, my Grandma’s big hugs, a loving greeting from my dog, Duke and a loaf of warm, Italian bread for dinner running through my mind. They always kept my heart and feet going right where they needed to go.

Life here on Earth can also be as tricky as walking on a narrow, steel beam at times. You may even feel in moments like a huge railroad car is about to fall on you. Don’t give up, though. It is times like these that you have to keep your eyes on home. Our lives here may be our house for a while, but they are not our home. As much as we may learn about love and grow in goodness here our true home still awaits us. It is there where the smiles will never cease, the hugs will go on forever, and the love will never end. It is there where we will feast in God’s warmth, love, and light. Enjoy your trip though life then, but always keep your eyes on home.

Because He lives, please, do not gossip about me.

For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged. Matthew 7:2a

And because He lives, it is not a good idea to lie about me, either.

For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins. Hebrews 10:26

Because He lives, I hope you do not deprive yourself by expecting the worst in me.

Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace is joy. Proverbs 12:20

And though He lives, do not expect to like everything you think to see in me.

For the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7

Because He lives, save your energy as my areas of weakness are not the same as yours.

They prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. Jeremiah 14:14

And because He lives, it is not a good idea to predetermine my problem as sin.

Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 1 John 3:9

Because He lives, God does not grant you permission to be my judge.

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 2:5

And because He lives, neither can you be my jury or executioner.

Who is he that condemneth?  It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Romans 8:34

Because He lives, do not expect me to perform outside of the limits of how God created me.

For all members have not the same office. Romans 12:4

Because He lives, there is no point in trying to pressure me into doing things your way.

Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:24

So, because He lives, neither is there purpose in laying on a guilt trip.

Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. 1 John 3:21

Because He lives, I cannot allow you to be my God.

Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:3

And because He lives, neither can I be your servant.

For it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Luke 4:8

So, because He lives, do not expect me to serve in a way that breaks my heart or His.

His commandments are not grievous. 1 John 5:3b

Because He lives, do not use the law in attempt to prevent me from my calling.

Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 19:14

As, because He lives, no matter how I fail, God can still use me.

For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. Romans 11:29

And because He lives, there is no need to claim credit that is mine.

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. James 4:10

Because He lives, neither is there reason to be jealous.

For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Matthew 7:8

Yet, just because He lives, do not think my every purpose is to bring you joy.

Thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. Revelation 4:11

And especially, because He lives, do not be disappointed when I cannot be like you.

Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:6-8

Because He lives, try not to be discouraged when I do not measure up to your expectations.

Those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. 1 Corinthians 12:23

In fact, because He lives, your focus need not be on me at all.

He shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. Philippians 3:21

And how can I know He lives?  I know He lives when I see Him in you.

To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Colossians 1:27

Even so, I know Him best when I, also, welcome Him to live through me.

~ God  is  Love ~

Perfect love casteth out fear.

1 John 4:18b

One can be sure of every false way

the moment it ceases to feel like love.

Herein is our love made perfect, that we may

have boldness in the day of judgment:

because as he is, so are we in this world.

1 John 4:17
