Today’s Stories

Martin Luther Home
by Bill Walker

The
Martin Luther Home is a place for people crippled  both in mind and body. There are folks there of all ages. It is not a nursing home, it is a home staffed by good caring people. It started here in the late 50s by a man named Donald Boyer.  He was also crippled in body. I knew and remember him well.

The name was changed, in order to get funds from others, but we old timers still call it the
Martin Luther Home, founded by the Lutheran Church. This place covers about 4 city blocks. The doors are not locked in day light hours. People can walk about to do as they
please. It is well kept; the buildings and the grounds are beautiful.

I have seen mental holding tanks for people, and also those with crippled bodies. This place puts those to shame. There are no words to describe how beautiful this place is, both inside and outside.

Years ago this ground was a plant nursery.  Gardens, trees and flowers were planted.  In the 50's it sold to the Lutherans to start this home.

The day I went there to tell stories, I noticed the chapel filling up, one by one, some in wheel chairs. The chapel is quite large, seating maybe 100, each seat like those in a movie house. There were about 50 there the day I went.

The Lady Preacher got up and played her string music box, sang a couple of songs with the help of some of the people there.  She turned it over to me and I told about four stories. I felt good doing my part. Lady Preacher asked me if there was a charge for this.  I said no way, if I can brighten their day, that's pay enough.

As I understand it, people of all faiths are welcome there, not just Lutherans. The Lady Preacher is not Lutheran. You have to see it to believe it.  I can't think of another place like it. I hope to go back again soon.

From there I went to a nursing home. I see no good in that whatsoever. I was given people who were not aware I was even there. It is sad and useless to try to tell stories to those who know nothing. It was a total waste of time.
I don't think I will ever go back there.

  Special Child

Conrad S. Cardinal

God's special child, how are you today?

I'm sorry you're ill, there must be pain,

though you never say.

Do you wonder why this thing that hurts

has chosen you?

I wish that I could answer and say something

wise or there was something I could do.

You are so brave, little one, always a smile

on your face.

I know in my heart that you deserve to win

this race.

Your heart is pure and faith is strong, a more

valiant child than I.

I'm afraid in your place I couldn't smile, I

could do no more than cry.

Perhaps the answer to your calm is knowing

God loves you.

You're to wise for this world and must move

on, there is much for you to do.

You've accomplished the things that God

has asked, your task on earth is done.

You've shown the world how to be brave and how

the battle is won.

The Children

Conrad S. Cardinal

Our children are so important to this world

we live in.

Hurting and scarring their lives is a tragic

sin.

Each day I hear another account of a horrible

thing that's been done.

It seems as though we've lost our way and

evil is on run.

A child is a flower in God's garden of life.

Not toy to be used and put through such

strife.

How can one live when they've hurt a child,

especially one of their own?

It's beyond me, so hard to see, why has

this problem grown?

They use the excuse, it happened to me,

that's why I've hurt this child.

They of all people know how it feels, their

answer drives me wild.

God surely feels the pain and must wonder

why.

There must be a way to stop this evil, at

least we have to try.

Life

Conrad S. Cardinal

Indeed life is a special gift and should

be treated as such.

Nurture it through all your days, it has

God's loving touch.

So fragile,so easily spent, handle it

with care.

Always look before you step, never

take a dare.

Pray about all your needs, follow

what's revealed.

If you fail and are hurt, God promises

you can be healed.

Spend your gift wisely, nurturing all

you meet.

Place all you have and all you are

at his blessed feet.

p.s.

Each day we see how

little the gift of life means

to some. Only those who's

life may be shortened seem

to appreciate the gift.

Readers Feedback

Re Who Inspires me.  by Pina Martinelli.              I still recall the loss of my parents with sadness.  We were not a large family or close for divisions based on religion held the great divide and it has stood forever like a fortress and those inside and outside have been lost.  But my mother’s loss was sudden and unexpected and I too felt tortured with the loss for she was a regular part of my day and of my children’s days.  I felt like an orphan ungrounded and disconnected.  I spoke with a good family friend some time later and told her how much I missed mother.  The woman was then in her seventies and startled me with her reply. “I miss my mother still, she said.  I talk to her every day.”  For some unknown reason I found the reply wonderfully reassuring.  I now have regular conversations with my mother and it keeps her real and close though it does seem like I do all of the talking.               Louise
