THE GIFT OF A SMILE

Ellie Braun Haley

The transition from living in your own home and directing every aspect
of your life to being confined to a wheelchair and being dependent on
others for everything, is a traumatic change.

Mother, at the age of 91, fell and her entire world changed.

She was in hospital for months and then moved to a Nursing facility. We
knew she would never go home again and then came the day when she too
knew it.

She had just been adjusting to yet another Nursing Home, and was
speaking with her son about going with him when he left. He told her
she could not come. “I’ll never go home again will I.” It was not a
question.

When I visited with mother I knew she felt useless and unhappy yet she
was trying to put up a brave front. I asked if I could read a short
story to her and she laid her head back on the pillow and waited for
the story.

The first story stimulated her to talk about God and miracles and
while she was speaking I was suddenly inspired to tell mother a
different story.

I told her the story of the PATIENT.

The patient was bedridden and only able to chat a bit and smile. ALL
the nurses looked forward to going into the PATIENT'S room, because
these health care workers were overworked, tired and in need of
something, something like the milk of human kindness.

In the PATIENT'S room they fed on the warmth of the smile they
received. Each person was uplifted by the good cheer, gentle words, and
by the abundant and concerned thoughtfulness of this one senior
PATIENT.

There were some in the hospital who yelled and whined. There were some
who cried and others who literally abused the staff with their harsh
words. but not THE PATIENT.

No, when staff entered the room of THE PATIENT it was as if they knew
here was a sanctuary! All of the care staff understood, in this room,
with this one PATIENT, they would ALWAYS receive the medicine of human
kindness. In that one room, they could always count on hearing kind
words, waiting to be dished out like candy to a child.

Cleaning staff, nurses, even doctors fed on the endless supply of
goodness dished out by THE PATIENT.

As I finished telling the story, commenting on how needed this PATIENT
was,.mother exclaimed, " Goodness, the staff here all say they like
coming into my room because I am so cheerful. I never thought about the
impact of it before."

I hope mother will always remember she makes a significant difference
in the lives of others merely by being gentle, kind and caring. How
wonderful to know ripples of goodness may make the difference between
encouraging a nurse to be uplifting and positive rather than
insensitive and irritable. What a blessing a smile and kind word can
have in the life of another!

Mother's children have always known she is a blessing to all of those
around her with her loving disposition. I hope Mother now knows it too!
Her presence is a gift to many

HE IS A HUMAN BEING AFTER ALL

Dr. Harmander Singh

"He is a great man,” she said to her elder sister.

"Yes. However, his greatness is like that of glory of darkness at night. Don't you think so?” she replied.

"What do you mean?” she asked.

"You know person gets terrified at night or in the darkness more than at the daytime or in light. Is not it?” the elder sister said.

"Yes. You are right. But he is a genius, how can he do the terrifying activities?” she asked.

"Do you understand what it means to be a genius?” the elder sister asked.

"I think those who are dedicated and sincere and excel in any field. Do you agree or it's not right?” she asked.

"You should remember that the genius neither terrifies anybody nor gets terrified him or herself. If it appears it needs our attention know if the person is introvert or extrovert, you consider everyone great and genius. What you said about dedication and sincerity, it is a common thing when one is looking after something profitable. Is it sign of genius?” the elder sister asked.

"We...Then what is he?” she asked.

"Remember my request that the only thing that the genius person bothers about is his or her duty. The dutifulness includes everything especially the surrender to do both service and duty,” the elder sister said.

"Well, then he is a pretender. Is not it?” she asked.

"No. You do not need to waste your energy and time for judging him or anybody else. One day, he will understand it because at least he is a human being. Is not it?” The elder sister said.

"Yea, I think he wills” the younger replied.

"You are right,” she said.

            Both were satisfied.

Daily Moral Insight for a Peaceful Night

Is not it great that we sometimes get awareness that we do not need to be humans of self assumed or dark wisdom?

Is not it a great venture to find a genius within us?

Is not it glory of dutifulness that it gives a meaning to sincerity and dedication?

Is not it a great to find fearlessness as our guide to be a human?

Is not it beautiful to give our self a pause to think that after all we are humans?

Mood Swings

Gautami Tripathy

a woman
trying to fit in-
to carve a niche
in blockades of time.
emotions make me
those mar me too.
you say I am moody
I know I am moody-
unpredictable too;
which is nothing new.
you try to plunge
into my mind;
I too try to plunge
into it unsuccessfully.
you say you cannot
understand me.

“do I understand myself?”

Lost and Found

Tripathy Gautami

with dried tears, she wept
tired, clasping non-descriptive
toy to her cheek, she slept

at last, when clock struck nine,
her world fallen apart. the epistle
had hit home taking all shine

from her. future was uncertain-
with most part being ambiguous
childhood no longer sustained.

in span of few hours, all was lost
her parents killed, her house blown
lifetime gone in mindless blast.

he watched her sleep, smoothing
her frowned brow, he smiled tenderly,
his hardened heart finally melting-

‘clutched his new daughter to heart’

Journal rides

Gautami Tripathy

with eagerness
borne out of curiosity-
I flip through old journals.

teenage angst
stops me on my track-
I shake my head surprised

about the way,
I used to behave back then,
uncaring for others.

I cringe
at what I was as an adolescent;
ruled more by hormones.

I flip bit more-
going through those elated
times getting truly caught

in the past.
I get a waft of perfume of olden
times left far behind.

Walking In The World

Gautami Tripathy

with despondency you hang your head
as an addendum, you get back to bed.

nothing seems to move for time being
all your aspirations seem to be fleeing.

up and downs are nothing new to fear
go right ahead, do not let it come near.

explore other areas where you are strong
with the right moves, it won’t go wrong.

impediment are but testing our endurance
why give in to self-destructing grievance?

taking on the world, perish that twisted view-
remember, your loved ones rally around you.

Readers Feedback

~**~**~

Wow, Heartsong! Jennifer Oliver wrote a great story!!!

I laughed and I cried... especially at the part where she realized her husband's tone-deafness didn't matter to their children; just the fact that he was singing to them from the bottom of his heart is what did matter. Wow! She is an excellent writer :) Thanks for sending this to me! I'm only sorry I didn't get to read it sooner.

Btw, I forgot to mention that I saw an email from Zinester. In it they tell me that I've been subscribed to Storytime Tapestry at Zinester.com. Did you re-subscribe me? If so, thanks so much! I'll be praying that your newsletter comes directly to me from Zinester from now on...
