THE BRAVE BUT FOOLISH HEN (February 2008)

By Georgewaters Ojeigbe – Lagos, Nigeria gojiegbe@jhplc.com

“Run children, hide under me, quickly before that good for nothing traitor descend on you all, be fast, this is no time for smeh, smeh (laziness).  It is coming for you!”  These were the words I figured the mother hen was saying to her chicks.

Mother hen’s chicks were totally confused and they tried harder to stay away from the flying carnivorous bird.  As it was getting too late for the chicks to stay clear from the vampire, mother hen had to put up a fight against the hawk.

On the hawk’s part, it underestimated the strength of the mother hen so it tried to figure out the weakest chick for lunch.  Then the battle of Armageddon began between the mother hen and the hawk.

Mother hen targeted the hawk’s head.  You know, in a wrestling competition, you defeat your opponent by studying his weakest point.  Mother hen peeked and peeked the hawk’s head.  She squawked as laud as she could, beat her wings as fast as she could.  Both mother hen and hawk raised dust with their wings.  Different feathers flew in the air and fell on the ground.  After a while, vampire hawk flew away; the loser, as it could no longer withstand the Armageddon war.  Errrr, no lunch for lazy creature hawk.

“Quack, quack.  Come out, it is celebration time!”  The mother hen called out to her chicks.

As the chicks were coming out to continue the game of ‘wider, wider’ and ‘round, around the garden’ with their mother, there came a greater trouble.  The trouble was a  black nylon bag rolling towards the fowl family.  A mere nylon you may say but wait and see what happened.

This time around, defensive strength failed mother hen.  Probably because of the black colour of the lifeless bag which was propelled by the wind or because of the constant swelling and circling of the nylon, or probably she had exhausted her strength in the previous war.

Wait a minute, this fight would have been easier for mother hen to win but fear of the unknown befell her and her upspring.  Not even pot of soup would have made her more frightened as this her life time experience.  So even fowls have fear of death, ‘shebi’ (‘hope I am right’)?

 She peeked the nylon once or twice but nylon bag retreated not.  Mother hen fled for her dear life.  She flew thirty inches above the ground leaving her chicks to run under a parked vehicle.  While she flew, the nylon kept circling about the area until I helped her out by picking the traitor away.

The scenario got me laughing until my ribs cracked and tears dropped from my eyes before the drama in my mind stopped.

The END!

A Slip of the Tongue

Janice Bumbalough Marler

A slip of the tongue can be a costly thing,

Its arrows cut deeply into the heart

Once said, it can not be undone or taken back,

 Cast off spays from the mouth effects everyone

How can we say we are a child of the Kings

If we do not control our tongues;

A small spark ignites fires,

And who can put out the flames?

The tongue is a powerful thing,

Although a small organ of the mouth

Out of it cursing and blessings spring

Animals great and small are tamed by man;

Who can tame the tongue?

No one can.

We criticize others and bless God from the same well;

Are we not all made in His likeness?

Do you not know that the stench of this smell

Permeates His nostrils when we transgress?

Earthly wisdom clutches us in its grip;

It is demonic in nature,

Satan fills hearts with wickedness

And disorder of every kind

As poisonous words from tongues do slip

Corrupting body and mind.

God’s wisdom is from above;

We, as Christians, have been set apart,

He has called us to peace, not dissension,

He has called us to unity and love,

If you can not control your tongue

You are only deceiving your heart.

Love one another

Carol, What a delightful story today by Louise Normani about her dead "box".  It brought many smiles and I could feel her dismay over the loss of such an important
appliance.   The poetry of David Fox is always a joy.
