 The Big Adventure

Bob Shaw

We’ve been looking for the perfect place for several years. Our home had been on the market for quite some time, and when it sold, we suddenly found ourselves under the gun. Our realtor took us to a few places to look at, and after being totally disappointed, we struck out on our own.

The next town had a house I wanted to check out, and after about 30 seconds, we were on our way back. Then, just on the edge of town, Ronni spotted a for sale sign in front of “the place”. I told her there was no way we could afford it, but she wanted to check it out anyway. After calling the number on the sign, I had to admit it. She was right again. “I told ya so”. Guess I’ll have to listen to that for awhile. The house turned out to be a Repo, and the contract on it had just fallen thru minutes before. It was back on the market, and an hour or two later, we made a bid on it. And the rest is history? Not really. For the next two months, everything we tried to do turned out to be a royal battle.

Our first closing date fell thru. We set a new date, and still couldn’t get the paper work sent back, then they wanted to set the closing date later again. Said it was because they were backlogged with so many forclosures. Gee, I wonder why…By this time, we were getting REALLY tired of the Motel life.

We talked to the Realtor, and decided to put in a phone call to our local Congress person. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but the paperwork, phone calls, and faxes started coming in the next day. Just in case, thanks Jo Jo. (Joanne Emmerson, Missouri US Congress person).

By the time we made it to the appraisal, we thought everything was going to sail thru. Then we got word that someone had broken in under the house and torn out the copper water lines. We had two options; One, we could pay for the damages, and take a reduction on the price of the house, or wait until they could get the repairs done. There was that Motel again. $2300 later, we had plumbing, and an appraisal.

Closing and moving day finally came. Aimee, the Shih Tzu was in the truck with me, and Baby the Cockatoo was in the car with Ronni, looking around and calling for Aimee all the way to the house. I guess the poor little thing missed her buddy. And Aimee was happy just to get out of that Motel room. All that time in the room, she’d been trying to figure out why we’d thrown away all our stuff. She’d spent her whole life guarding it, and we just threw it away. Then we move into this big empty place, and left her perfectly good home behind.

We cleaned, painted, removed carpets, replaced the appliances, and spent days doing a hundred other things getting it just right. When Aimee saw all of her stuff coming back, she was happy. Baby didn’t care one way or the other. She thinks her cage is an RV, and she’s home anyplace she goes.

It took us a almost a week to get our phone in. Thanks AT&T.  We still have a lot of work to do, inside and out, but we’re home.

 An Unusual Easter Bunny

 Cynthia Groopman

When I think of a toy Easter bunny, it is usually plush and soft,

As I stroke it, into my head dance pleasant and cheerful thoughts.

However, this Easter I did receive a rather unusual toy bunny.

When I see it merrily hop along, my mood becomes very silly and funny.

For to be honest and frank,

My unusual Easter bunny is actually a little coin savings bank.

As I place coins inside the slot, everyday,

My money will grow like a springtime flower in a glorious way.

Thus this story is really true,

And I hope it brought enjoyment, smiles and laughs to all of you.

 All of My Moments

Cynthia Groopman

All of my moments, are truly cherished and so precious to me,,

With deep profound thoughts, I think of them wistfully.

Of being a child and visiting the relatives in the country,

Was indeed a memorable moment to savor for me.

When the older folks gathered together on the porch and laughed and spoke at night,

Oh, thinking of those moments as an adult, is such a treat and a delight.

Embracing my grandmothers with such love and glee,

Is a moment that fills my soul with serenity.

In a quiet moment, the voices of my dear ones, I do hear,

Filling my sky of life with cheer.

Holding my mom's and dad's hand, was a moment so golden and so dear,

Oh, I wish they were here.

Running to greet my dad at the door,

Is a jeweled moment, I just adore.

I know i cannot live in the past,

Moments of family joy never last.

But in the back of my mind,

Gems of moments, I can find.

An Ode to a Sweet Little Bird

Oh, sweet little bird,

Your charming early morning songs, are the most majestic I have heard.

Singing with such elegant mirth,

Oh sweet little bird you are truly the most delightfully exquisite creation of God dwelling on this vast wonderful earth.

Adding such joy to each and every spring and summertime day,

Oh sweet little bird, you enchant and dazzle us in a spectacular magnificent way

.

Flapping your wings and flying all around,

Oh, little bird, I am deeply marvelled by your lovely musical sounds.

Oh, little bird, with a big big bright smile on my face,,

As I listen to you merrily chirping, in the glow of golden sunshine,I am lovingly embraced.

The Good Old Days

Cynthia Groopman

Oh, the good old days,

Indeed were blessings and cherished gems in a multitude of different ways.

When walking on the street,

With big smiles and cheerful hellos people would meet and greet.

Doors were held open wide,

Solace and comfort were given to the weary, the ill and those who cried.

When a call was made, their was a human voice answering on the other end

The answers were given by the person acting like a caring friend

.

Merchants knew your name,

Dogs and cats were obedient and tame.

People were not impersonal and arrogant in their behavior and had manners,

Food was of good quality, and ripe and tasty were grapes, apples and bananas.

Elevators were not automated,

Phone chats were full of love and people were elated.

Neighbors cared,

They rang doorbells and shared

Teachers taught penmanship, arithmetic and the basic a b c,

Life was full of fun, friendship and festivity.

Unfortunately those days are gone

Nowadays, people lack etiquette, and charm

The clock of time we cannot turn

But  from the good days of old, we must strive to emulate and to learn.
