RETROSPECTIVE
10:05 PM As I sit here watching
these candles flicker in the late night breeze, I hear the sounds of crickets,
trains and faint voices in the distance. The candles do not give off much
heat but the warmth that I feel is overwhelming. The sounds of the day’s
activities have all but ceased as neighbors have nestled in for the
night. I look up at the windows of the bedrooms of our two children and
see that their lights are still on. Even though it is late they are not
yet ready to call it a day. Family activities have made the week day
evening longer than usual these days but I still cannot yet bring myself to
stop and sleep for the night. Above
this burning candle at rest on the middle of the driveway, warmed by the hot
afternoon sun is the American flag, hanging from the center of the house above
the garage doors shining bright against the black night sky illuminated by a
single dedicated fixture and giving off ample light for me to write my
collected thoughts. My
wife, daughter, son, parents, sisters and brothers are all safe tonight with
clothes for warmth, bodies full with food for health and love to live by.
We as a people seem to take for granted more times than not the simplest of
human needs and how fragile we can all become in their absence. As
I write I cannot help but feel those emotions as a thankful parent knowing that
for tonight my family is safe, protected by the most advanced and dedicated
country that exists on the face of this earth; but I know so many are not in my
shoes. The
sound of airplanes in the distance brings back to reality the pain we have all
suffered this past year. I cannot imagine having to have spent it without
a loved one as I know so many have been, that pain must be unbearable….. How
can I possibly find myself in a position where I might complain about anything
in my life that may not be up to my expectation, as I am alive and sitting here
writing these thoughts, where so many are not. Why
them over me; why them at all? We all have the chance to make a
difference every minute that we take a breath, it is only a simple choice; just
like brushing our teeth every morning and giving a hug to a loved one as often
as we choose. What
are we going to be called to do? Is it more than we are currently doing
now? If we are at the end of our ropes now, how can we begin to weight
our burdens? God, though will never give us more than we can carry even
if we are blind to the inner strength we all posses. How do we begin to
say thank you for all that we have been fortunate to accumulate as we have
lived our lives? Maybe it is a simple as saying ’thank you…’ Maybe it is as
simple as basic human gratitude………. Hopefully
we as a nation have grown not only as Americans but also as a collective human
race. Let us continue to learn, cherish, forgive, never forget, and
become more patient and honest and to do things with selfless abundance and to
forever be more generous. This
candle in front of me burns strong and bright for my tired and tearful
eyes. My heart aches for the losses we have burdened as a nation and the
knowing that times will forever be changed. God,
grant us the peace and comfort of a caring and protective hand. Keep us
from the evil and devastating forces that do not understand what America is,
help us to be the teachers. You have never let us walk alone; maybe now
we will see more clearly your footsteps. Thank you for the gift of
freedom and for the strength of those who defend it. 10:39 PM Allan Wich allanw@AMAA.com Poetry Corner ~**~**~ Don't Be Fooled Conrad S. Cardinal
