The Hen Was Not So Lucky
Sharon Bryant
Some of you are emailing me about
the story I wrote about the German Shepherd named Lucky that my son found and
brought home.
Lucky's name has been changed to
"Sissy." She is still a beautiful dog, kind, friendly, and sweet to
humans. But not chickens.
Yesterday one of our mama hens was
under our porch lying on her eggs. Sissy forced her way under the porch
and attacked the hen. She killed her, and then ran for our barn with the
hen in her mouth. Hubby and I were at work when my son called to tell
us. He was very upset. We decided maybe it was better to take Sissy
to "Tears" because of all the hens and roosters we have on our property.
My husband left the shop and
went home for a few minutes. My son had put Sissy in our fenced in
area. My husband went outside to see Sissy, when her leash wrapped around
his legs and threw him on the ground. Last week he fell from a shelf and
landed on his arm, and just this week he's been able to move it. He fell
on that arm.
He was groaning on the ground when
Sissy ran to him, laid down next to him and pressed her body against his, then
kissed his face.
He returned to my shop, told me what
happened, then said, "How can we get rid of her, when she was so sweet and kind
to me when I was on the ground?" I just looked at him and said,
"SOFTIE!"
Sissy now has a nice run of her
own. We can't let her roam the acreage for fear she's going hunting
again. We have to separate her and "Bob" because Bob (the corgi) thinks
he's as big as her and tries to pick a fight. We don't want the two of
them fighting as Sissy is 4 times the size of Bob.
We have several roosters and hens
and we don't want them harmed.
There are 10 little eggs sitting in
my frig right now.....but there is no way I can use them.
I looked at them this morning and
thought....."Those could have been another Little Red, or another one of those
cute fuzzy black hens."

LOREN MOORE
IT??™S HAPPENED
AGAIN. I GOT ANOTHER PACKAGE IN THE MAIL. IT HAD A BAR OF LIFEBUOY SOAP IN IT.
THE PACKAGE WAS MAILED IN GLADEWATER, TEXAS, MY OLD HOME TOWN. IT HAD A RETURN ADDRESS ON IT THAT READ
???1950
MEMORY LANE??? BUT THERE IS
NO MEMORY
LANE IN
GLADEWATER. I CALLED CITY HALL TO MAKE SURE.
THERE WAS A NOTE
IN THE PACKAGE WITH THE BAR OF SOAP. IT SAID;
???HELLO, IT??™S ME
AGAIN. THIS WAS NOT WRITTEN ON A TYPEWRITER SO DO NOT LET YOUR DETECTIVE WASTE
TIME TRYING TO IDENTIFY A TYPEWRITER. THE PAPER IS CLEAN (NO FINGERPRINTS OR
IDENTIFYING MARKS). IT IS XEROX PREMIUM MULTI-PURPOSE PAPER THAT MAY BE
PURCHASED AT ANY DISCOUNT CENTER. DO NOT ADMIT YOURSELF TO THE HOSPITAL. IF YOU AND/OR
YOUR DETECTIVE DO NOT SOLVE THIS MYSTERY WITHIN 30 DAYS I WILL REVEAL MY
IDENTITY (IF I STILL KNOW WHO I AM).???
IT WAS SIGNED
???THE LIFEBUOY PHANTOM??? AND I AM BEGINNING TO BELIEVE IN PHANTOMS.
I??™M STILL WAITING FOR THE 30 DAYS TO BE OVER BUT I DON??™T KNOW
WHITHER TO BELIEVE THE PHANTOM OR NOT. IF HE/SHE HAS KEPT HIS/HER IDENTITY
SECRET THIS LONG WHY REVEAL HIS/HER SELF NOW.
ANOTHER THING, IS
THE PHANTOM THE ONE WHO SENT ME THE LIFEBUOY SOAP TIN BOX? THAT COULD BE SOMEONE
ELSE ALTOGETHER.
THEN THERE IS SOMETHING I??™VE BEEN KEEPING
SECRET ALL THIS TIME. I RECEIVED TWO BARS OF LIFEBUOY SOAP FOR CHRISTMAS 2001.
THE CHRISTMAS PRESENT DIDN??™T COME IN THE MAIL IT JUST SHOWED UP UNDER OUR
CHRISTMAS TREE WRAPPED IN CHRISTMAS PAPER WITH A BIG RED BOW ON
IT.
DOES THIS MEAN THAT JOHNNIE IS IN ON THE CONSPIRACY? I DON??™T
THINK SO. I??™VE LIVED WITH HER TO LONG FOR HER TO GET AWAY WITH SOMETHING LIKE
THIS FOR THIS LONG. BELIEVE ME I WOULD KNOW. YOU CAN??™T STAY MARRIED TO SOMEONE
FOR 52 YEARS WITHOUT GETTING INTO THEIR MIND.
BUT THAT??™S A WHOLE

A
Weekly Column
By Joseph Walker
THE HARD WAY
Joe
Walker
My
friend Peter (not his real name) learned a valuable lesson last weekend:
never weld while wearing thongs (at this point I think I need to clarify
that by "thongs" I mean the flip-flopping open-toed sandal kind of footwear
- although, come to think of it, the lesson could apply equally well to any
other kind of thong that may come to mind).
As with so many of the most
powerful lessons life has to teach us, Peter
learned this lesson the hard
way. He was puttering around in his garage
working on a project when
it became clear that what was needed was some
welding.
"The first thing
my dad told me when he was teaching me how to weld is,
always wear gloves,
long pants and solid shoes when you're welding," Peter
confessed. "Of
course, he didn't really need to tell me that. I mean, it's
sort of
obvious, isn't it?"
Well, yeah, it is - even to those of us whose only
experience with actual
hands-on welding was during junior high metal shop,
when the teacher kept
our spot-welding project to show to future classes as
an example of what NOT
to do. We know who we are.
But even though
he knew better, Peter decided to go ahead and weld even
though he was
wearing thongs and shorts. He made this decision for two
reasons. First, it was only a little bit of welding that needed to be
done.
In the time it would take him to put on long pants and shoes
and socks,
he'd have the weld completed.
The second reason for his
decision is . . . well, he's an adult male.
Enough said.
So he
proceeded to weld, standing as far back as he could so the sparks
wouldn't
land directly on his exposed legs or feet. And for the most part,
it
worked - the weld was completed without incident. But as he bent over
the project and began to flick away the welding residue, one last glowing
ember bounced onto the ground and onto his foot, nestling between two
toes.
Yelping, Peter tried to shake the ember away, but it was so
snugly ensconced
between those toes that he had to pluck it out with his
fingers, which made
him yelp even more.
Dousing the sizzling digits in
cold water and applying some soothing lotion
helped remove some of the
sting, but none of the embarrassment.
"I know better than that," Peter said,
still chuckling at the memory. "Dad
warned me a million times about
what could happen. He even showed me the
scar on his leg."
"The
scar?" I asked.
"Yeah," he said. "I don't remember the whole story -
something about
needing to weld something while he was wearing swimming
trunks."
Evidently Peter comes from a long line of men who learn lessons the
hard
way.
As do we all, come to think of it. The guy who invented
fire was probably
also the guy who figured out that if you touch fire it
burns. Still, people
have been playing with fire - literally and
figuratively - from that day to
this, learning and re-learning life's
lessons without regard to the warnings
that inevitably come from those who
have experienced stuff before us. We
hear the warning, and we think,
"I need to remember that." But when the
time comes to put the lesson
into practice, we decide that we're smarter or
stronger or a better welder,
and we think things will somehow turn out
better for us.
And we get
burned.
Which reminds me: I asked Peter how his wife had reacted to the
welding
incident.
"I didn't mention it to her," he said. "She would
never let me hear the
end of it."
It sounds to me like he's learned
another lesson.
The hard way.

Going
visiting while sitting at home
Norma
Liles
Living
alone can be very lonely, for some people but not me~ I have so many people
coming to pay a visit that sometimes, I just need to get off into another room
to find a place to myself.
No,
I haven't lost it altogether; just making a statement of fact. You see, it
is like this; you may have entertained angels unaware but I know that I
entertain a lot through cyberspace.
I
have this one darling niece who I rarely see that meets with me almost on a
daily basis from her perch in the state of Washington
to my screen here in Ohio.
Then I have my friend, Dixie,
who meets with me from her armchair in Missouri
to give me her plans for she and her husband's day; the
Hammonds..
Never
could I tire of hearing from my Injun friend, Harry, who is the reigning
King of Komedy in the Hammond
household! Then we have my cousin, Fred, in
California
who is handicapped with Parkinson's but keeps me informed on our family's
genealogy. From there we move along his state to my friend who carries my
name, Norma, constantly sending me reassurances of our friendship Moving on
up the road a piece from her, we have my friend, Melbah who keeps me on my toes
with her daily inspirational tracts.
From
there, we may go along the waterways to my friend, Bette, who is from my home
state of Ohio
which lends interest and from there, we travel to southern
Calif
to San
Marcos
where my friend, Barb lives and keeps me informed of their travels and her
writings.
We
travel over to Georgia where my youngest daughter, Lori, lives; keeping me
informed of my grandson, Zack's latest ventures on the computer to the neat
things that her new baby girl, Katlyn, is learning. And then we travel a little
more south of Atlanta to chat with my granddaughter, Melodi, who lives is
Valdosta who checks to see if G'ma has a minute or two to spare for her.
We
aren't done yet as we find my daughter, Cheryl, beeping her instant
messenger; to see if Mom is behaving; giving me the latest on what my son (her
husband ~ my son only through love ~ not biological) and so you see, life for me
is not lonely.
Life
can be lonely if you wish it to be but if you, my friend, are a victim of
cyberspace, you can only be lonely, if you wish to be!
Now,
I have to squeeze in some time for my writings? Never let it be said that I
ignored my most welcome newsletter from Storytime_Tapestry! Heaven
forbid!

Trish MacQueen??™s ??“ book -I love this! Naturally, I am working on a
very dry research project,
longing to write in genres more relevant to the
romance/fantasy/romance/fiction that you just treated me to, and now I just
want to go on a date!
Thank you for this break as I work. I
needed it. Badly!

Help If You Can ??“ Operation We
Care
I'd like to ask if anyone would take
the time to write a letter, send a note, or just a card to a soldier in
Iraq.
She is the sister of my post
master. She's been deployed for over a month in
Iraq.
She's left behind four
children. She misses her family, and she's pulling long hours of
duty.
Her brother is also military and is
leaving for a two-year deployment to Germany. Many of you will recall, his
baby was diagnosed with cancer at 6 months and many stepped in to send a card
when his life was in total turmoil. Again, I thank all who helped make his
and his wife's life brighter knowing people cared.
If you'd like to write to this
solider, would you please email me and I will give you her address.
Thank you,
Sharon

Prayer
Requests
Hi to the Storytime Family!
Although I have asked Carol's help and
advice, I would like to make this a matter for prayer. I am certain that several
out there have published or are working toward publishing a book. After several
years of writing for some great e-zines, which I still do, the Eagles Garden
Publishing Ministries now of Richmond,
VA, (EaglesEyrie e-zine), helped me to create
a book. We worked on it for months. Since I did not write for money, I decided
that any commissions to me would go for needs of others, especially a
Western NY mom needing a double-lung transplant. My
editor, however, became very ill. I had to edit the book 2x for the printer. At
first we thought ready by X-mas, then January, then 6 weeks -- about now.
However, I have been unable to reach the pub, Deborah Lynn Haley, since Feb. 1.
I have churches and Christian bookstores waiting for the book and my Christian
promise to the mom of my help. I know that God can still restore the original
effort (I have the entire book and cover in my hard drive) or find me someone
who knows a publisher, but this is a matter of prayer -- and I ask for
everyone's prayers and help where possible. Thank you! Vance Agee -- vgagee@adelphia.net
Subject: Prayer Needed X-Brightmail: Message tested, results are
inconclusive
Ma
Please do me a favor and add my brother Ray Price to your
prayer list
and request all of your prayer buddies to pray hard. My brother
is in
the hospital. His liver has almost completely shut down and they
think
it is a matter of time. I will not be at work tomorrow. I will call
them
in the morning. He has drank for over 25 years so it comes as no
shock
to find liver damage but still he is my baby brother, Lisa and it
hurts.
Might want to pray for me too, huh. Will let you know of anything I
find
out about him after I see him tomorrow.

There is a lady where I work, her name is Claudette. She has been
with
the company about 17 years and works in the photo lab. Well a
customer came
in and wanted her to develop some " nudie" pictures and
she refused because
she knew it was wrong. It seems that this customer
complained to the home
office and Claudette was fired. This has really
upset me. I know its "none of
my business" so to speak but she was
honest, hardworking, and a loyal
employee. They say she is eligible for
rehire in 30 days. Please pray for
this
lady..
