 Journey to Spring

by Sherri Hosieni

White snow blankets the world beyond my window.  I see the mountains of the Wasatch rise from the desert floor separating the remnants of an ancient sea from naked, white barked Aspen forests.  It is late March in Utah, spring by the calendar, yet winter remains.  Silvery shards of ice stretch from the eves of my house.  They drip, drip, drip in the gray muffled morning sunlight.

In the Salt Lake Valley, far below my mountain perch, trees are forming tiny leaf buds and a few brilliant yellow daffodils have sprung forth from their winter slumber.  No signs of new life surround me yet, but faith in their voyage sustains me through the cold.

I sense birth in the darkness of winter??™s journey.  As with life, the cold, fearful, lonely moments are tempered by conviction in a brighter day.  Soul binding hurt thrust upon us by regret, abuse, illness, grief, fear, and ignorance are fertile ground for either despair or personal renaissance.  I choose rebirth.  I choose renewal.

The red tulips struggle in the soil??™s darkness to stretch forth their tall necks in triumph.  It may be late May before they emerge from winter??™s abundant gloom, to drink in the nourishment of Utah??™s late spring sunshine; but surface they will.  Winter visits each life with the seeds of integrity, courage, and endurance.  A choice to live in perpetual darkness is a life unfulfilled.  I choose to journey, like the tulip, through the shadows, ever ready to embrace the sunshine of spring.
