~ Sherri and the Holy Ghost ~

Sandra Griffin

I remember well, one Sunday in particular, our girls were then about six and seven, or maybe a little older; not sure.  To say they listened would be a wild stretch of my over active imagination.  But, this one Sunday comes to mind.

The message was on the Holy Spirit and how we needed to be filled with Him.  The Bible says that it comes from the very depths of our being, as it flows like a river from our bellies.  The term we most often use is from 'our hearts' or 'in our heart'.

On the ride home from church, a ride of about six or seven minutes, both girls were extremely quiet.  They, both, seemed to be listening, this morning.  Though, you never can be sure with Sherri, as she has always marched to her own music and still does, today (as a mother of three teenagers).

    Well, any way, I digress.

They were quiet.  So, I turned to look at them, in the back seat of the car, and it looked like Sherri had tears in her eyes.  So, I asked, "What's a matter Peanut (our name for Sherri)?"

Then, she really began to cry, "Mamma, is it true that, in order to go to heaven, you have to have the Holy Ghost living in your belly?"

    I nodded, "Yes.  Why, peanut?"

"I don't want a ghost living in my belly.  It would make my tummy hurt!" Peanuts responded.

Her Dad and I, both, started laughing.  Then, we explained, to her, that it was like Jesus coming to live in her heart.  That made it better.  Though, I still find occasion to smile when I hear the term 'Holy Ghost'.

A couple years later, Peanut gave her heart to Jesus and let the Holy Ghost come in.  I'm sure he has had a bumpy ride, over the years.  But then, He can handle it.  It's her I'm not sure He can handle.  lol
