Ignoring the tingling
discomfort of a leg too long in the same position, I gently pulled you closer
to me, careful not to cause you additional pain. Gazing into your
trusting eyes, I murmured endearments, stroking you, soothing you, trying to
keep your fear at bay.
Soon, you would be gone
from me. Soon, my baby girl would succumb to the insidious disease that
was tearing us apart. Soon I would have to let you go, forever.
My mind reeled with the
reality of our imminent parting. The disease that wracked your body had
moved too quickly, far more quickly than the doctors had predicted. I
wasn't ready!
Slowly, gingerly, I
lifted your head from my lap and stretched out full length beside you.
Gathering you into my arms, and tucking your head between my chin and
shoulder, I whispered my love, gently stroking your head, calming you, making
you feel safe: Mama was here. Everything was all right.
Cradled in my arms, you
became calm. I moved my hand until it rested upon your chest. I
could feel your heart beat - and mine broke! You let out a long sigh and
I felt your heartbeat no more.
