Father's Day

Dianna Doles Petry

I woke up with you on my mind this morning,

Remembering your just shaved scent.

How good it felt when you hugged me,

How fast those days of our lives were spent.

It's Father's Day and you're not here,

So I can't offer you a gift or a smile.

I can't talk to you just to hear your voice,

Or sit and visit with you for a while.

I can only remember the times we shared,

Things you taught me that get me through.

I can still be my "daddy's little girl",

When I close my eyes and think of you.

I wonder if I showed you enough love,

Or showed you how strong I am before you died.

I'm doing fine, Dad, taking care of myself,

Teaching my children about respect and pride.

It's Father's Day and you're not here,

Except in the corners of my heart and mind.

There you will live as long as I breathe,

Living and laughing, leaving the world behind.

With love and respect,

Dianna Doles Petry

My Father

Dianna Doles Petry

We sat there in the room together,

Alike and yet so far apart.

I always had a difficult time,

Sharing the feelings deep in my heart.

We had so many things in common,

But words were hard to find.

I guess I thought that loved ones,

Should be able to read my mind.

A good life he had given to me,

Many times he dried my tears.

Had I really given him my best?

Had I proven my love thru the years?

Not having him to talk to now,

Still eats at me like a disease.

I know that we had our ups and downs,

But it was him that I struggled to please.

I touched his shoulder gently that day,

He looked at me, then looked away.

I wish I had known it was my last chance,

To find the words I needed to say.

Now I think about the yesterdays,

When I was the sparkle in his eyes,

There was no need for spoken words,

It's something I finally came to realize.

He showed his love by taking care of me,

Trying to shield me from any pain.

So when the days are long and tiring now,

I return to my childhood where he's smiling again.

Poetry Tributes

Written by Nicole M. Stevenson

My father a man of strength and Statue

Full of laughter and jokes

Firm and his word

You knew when not to joke

He would just give you one look

That is all it took

To know whether or not he was serious

The tone of his voice would explain it all

When he smiled at  you it would make your day

Spending time with the kids was all that mattered

We may not of had the latest fad I really didn't care

When his nephews and nieces called on him he would come

My father a man of strength and Statue

Full of laughter and jokes

Firm and his word

Now before my eyes his winter has come

A sickness has entered his body

Turned him into someone I don't know

It hurts me so bad and sometimes anger sets in

On the coldest day I can feel intense heat

But for a brief moment when he smiles in calls me by my nickname I remember

My father a man of strength and Statue

Full of laughter and jokes

Firm and his word

Tears come to my eyes and truth sets in

By the end of the day, he  has done something that makes no sense

I have to remember that a sickness has entered his body

Turned him into someone I don't know

It hurts me so bad and sometimes anger set in

On the coldest day I can feel intense heat

But for a brief moment when he smiles in calls me by my nickname I remember

Dedicated to the fathers that have Alzheimer, Cancer or any disease that affects their body& minds!
