East Meets West

Aug 18, 2005

To continue with my vision of a world tapestry of love and understanding of cultural values throughout the world, every Thursday we will be graced by the artistic vision of Mr. Deepak Morris, a wonderful playwright and friend from Prune, India.

His plays have been preformed in front of audiences in Toronto, Canada

The Mysterious Man-eater of Northern India

Deepak Morris

This is the blurb of a program that was aired on National Geographic:
"In 1996, a reign of terror swept through northeastern
India. A mysterious predator was killing the children. Word of the attacks spread across the country like wildfire. With each retelling of the attacks, the description of the killer took on fantastic proportions. Angry mobs of people began to stone and club strangers, believing them to be the killer. Indian wildlife official R.L. Singh toured the affected villages and carefully questioned witnesses. Beginning to suspect the wolf, he searched for evidence to explain such aberrant behavior. Wolves are extremely shy and avoid people whenever they can. The wolves of India have always supplemented their wild diet with local livestock, but attacks on humans have been virtually unknown in this country. Now, Singh must determine if the killer is in fact a wolf, and if so, he must stop the attacks before public tolerance of the wolf is lost forever. "

I had watched the program. It was chilling.

Children were being snatched just feet away from their mothers or playmates. Their half-eaten bodies would be found a day or so later.

There was no spoor of any kind. No tracks on the ground or fur entangled in the thorny bushes in which the killer had lain in wait.

The experts argued with each other about whether it was a wolf or a large cat. The issue was never resolved. Night vigils proved as fruitless as attempts to track the beast by day.
