Doctor Anyone? Aro ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? The antiseptic smell, the scrubs, the stale magazines greet me accompanied by a waft of perfumed aftershave.
Nurses and techs beckon "Come here. Go there. Sit. Stand. Insurance cards please."
Fatigued furniture envelopes my frame as I wait patiently for someone, anyone to name me as the next patient.
The wood on the chair arms, many have touched. Too many for me to rest my hands upon.
Framed
paintings of places never visited line the walls. A counterfeit plant, banished to the corner, garners dust.
One patient sleeps, another reads, one has brought her lunch I believe.
A wheelchair near the door, a cane propped against the wall, telltale signs of healing that transpires within these hallowed halls of Doctordom.
I see the pain, the anguish, the impatience and frustration on the faces of those invited to this private pity party.
The wait continues for us, each absorbed in our own world. Those however, who dare to subject others to one sided cell phone conversations in waiting rooms, would need a wheelchair or cane, had I the power.
Old ones leave; New ones arrive. A fresh mix of personal fragrances now begins to invade my senses,
along with the thought of ending up as the plant in the corner, dusty and deceased, surrounded by false hopes and weeds.
The man I await would not allow such inaction. He cares too much for that. "Above all, do no harm." So grateful I am, that he is mine.
"The Doctor will see you now," words that become symphonic to me.
aro 2005 Bio:
Writing has always been my passion. I enjoy creating from a word or phrase. Living in the country with my two dogs, Little Bit and Pepper, provides a relaxing atmosphere for me to expand on ideas and discover the writer within.
Currently I am working on a book about Little Bit, my blind black lab. Someday I hope to retire and spend the rest of my days writing and caring for handicapped animals. I am the proud parent of a US Soldier who has recently returned to Iraq for his second deployment. I pray daily for his safe return, and for the return of all of our Heroes.
