Indian Summer

? Pamela Blaine

I just recently read that the equator was in the direct path of the sun, day and night were of equal length, and the North and South Poles received equal light.? ?  Upon reading that, I nearly threw the paper down and like Chicken Little, begin running around warning everyone that ???The sky is falling!???

However, I found that the words weren??™t nearly as ominous as they sounded.I quickly realized that it was only a description of the ???autumn equinox??? and it happens every year.It is more commonly known as the first day of autumn. However, another term that is frequently used during this time of year is ???Indian summer??? and I began to wonder just what exactly was Indian summer, and where did the name originate?

For some reason, I had a picture in my mind of Indian sweethearts out strolling hand in hand in the sunshine amid the colorful wilderness foliage on a beautiful autumn day. However, even if there were some truth in that, there remained the question of who decided to call this time of year Indian summer rather than Caucasian Summer or any number of other ethnic combinations.I assumed that there surely was a reason so I began to do a little research.

I discovered that the American Meteorological Society defined Indian Summer as:"A time interval, in the mid to late autumn of unseasonably warm weather, generally with clear skies, sunny but hazy days, and cool nights.???

This seemed like a good explanation but it still didn??™t tell me what the whole thing had to do with Indians. The earliest usage of the term that I could find was in 1778, when it was used by a Frenchman named St. John de Crevecoeur, yet he described it as if the term ???Indian Summer??? had already been used before so I still could not find where the term began.

Some other information that I found was that the term, ???Indian summer??? might have come about because it was the time of year that the Indians would begin to hunt when the cooler weather began.

Another completely different explanation that I came across had to do with the Indian Ocean rather than the American Indian as we might naturally suppose the name might have meant. It said that many years ago ships sailing on the Indian Ocean took the opportunity to load most of their cargo during that time of year when it was cooler yet a fair weather season, thus the term ???Indian summer???.It was said that some ships even had ???I.S.??? on their hulls to show the load level that was safe during the Indian summer.

With all the varying opinions as to the source of the name, ???Indian summer???, the most popular belief that most people agree on is that it is an abnormally warm and dry period of time in autumn, usually in October or November. This time may vary in length but it comes after a killing frost or freeze. There may also be several occurrences of Indian summer in the same year or no occurrences at all.

After researching Indian summer, it seems that nobody really knows for sure where the name came from, but one thing I do know is that we had better enjoy the few fleeting days, if we are blessed with them, because Indian summer doesn??™t stay around long before winter comes along. If snow and ice fall on Chicken Little??™s head, he may convince you that the sky is falling, but just a word to the wise, if you see Foxy Loxy,. ??¦don??™t go home with him.

CHARMING IDIOSYNCRASIES AND IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

A young friend of mine is in love.At least, she??™s pretty sure she is.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  And why not?The young man of her dreams is outstanding in every respect: tall, handsome, hard-working, tall, handsome, of strong moral character, intelligent, tall, handsome, spiritually motivated, dynamic, tall, handsome, fiscally disciplined, ambitious, tall and handsome.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  Oh, and did I mention that he's tall and handsome?

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  Emily (not her real name) is pretty excited about the relationship.Jim (not his real name, either) is everything she could possibly want in a ??“ dare we say it? ??“ husband.Except . . .

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  Well, OK, there is one little problem.Emily has always loved music and theater. She has a beautiful voice and loves to sing, and she enjoys going to the theater, even occasionally acting in a show.Jim, on the other hand, isn??™t especially interested in such things. The other night when she asked him if he would go to a play with her, he said he would go ??“ but only to be with her.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  That wasn??™t good enough for Emily.???I don??™t want to feel like I??™m dragging him to the theater,??? she told me.???If he doesn??™t want to go, I won??™t force him.But how can I even think about marrying someone who doesn??™t like all of the same things I do????

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  We talked about the possibility that Jim hadn??™t been exposed to the theater much during his growing up years, and how he might learn to appreciate it if she introduces it to him a little at a time through carefully selected productions.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  ???But what if he refuses to go???? Emily asked.???Or what if he goes but doesn??™t really give it a chance, or if he does give it a chance and decides he really hates it?Then what????

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  It??™s a good question, one with which every happily married couple I know has eventually had to come to terms. No matter how compatible two people are, no matter how much in love, no matter how deeply devoted to each other, no matter how much alike in every other respect, there is always something about which they disagree. It may seem like a little thing at first, even a charming idiosyncrasy, hardly worth mentioning. But time and proximity have a way of turning little things into big things, and charming idiosyncrasies into irreconcilable differences.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  Emily is aware of that. That??™s why she??™s worried. She knows that what she has going here is special, and she doesn??™t want to lose it.On the other hand, she doesn??™t want to make a commitment to a relationship that is doomed to failure ??“ no matter how hard-working, talented, strong, intelligent, motivated, dynamic, disciplined and ambitious Jim may be.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  Not to mention tall and handsome.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  Thankfully, most differences can be worked out in any relationship. In fact, some differences can be downright healthy, leading to growth and maturation as individuals, couples and families. When Anita and I were married (28 years ago this week, believe it or not), she introduced me to camping, home-made enchiladas and punctuality.I introduced her to Spam.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  OK, bad example.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  The best marriages, it seems to me, result from a healthy mix of two different sets of likes, dislikes, habits and traditions, creating a new family culture that is unique and satisfying.Come to think of it, there are only a few things that really need to be shared: personal and family values, standards of behavior (including financial philosophy), religious beliefs.Differences in those important matters can be difficult ??“ sometimes impossible ??“ to overcome. But pretty much everything else can be dealt with by two people who love each other enough to share everything.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  Even their differences.

If I Were Called

Joyce C. Lock

~*~

If I were called to teach,
I'd give it my best.

If I were called to preach,
I'd better pass the test.

If I were called to reach,
I'd do it with much zest.

If I were called to each,
I'd surely need some rest.

Mt. 11:29b

~*~

? ? ? ?  We, often, hold high expectations for our spiritual leaders (as does God) to teach, minister, give guidance and direction, to be the example, live what they preach, and to be available, willing, and able to meet our need.We truly are blessed when we have such a person in our life.

? ? ? ?  However, were we to multiply our need by the entire membership of our church, we would see that our expectation is somewhere between unrealistic and nearly impossible.Leadership often finds themselves between a rock and a hard place as, even for the most devoted of servants, there aren't enough hours in a day.

? ? ? ?  What a good thing it would be were we to give something in return:

1.)? ? ? ? ?  to volunteer services to make their load easier.

2.)? ? ? ? ?  to not lean on them but upon God.

3.)? ? ? ? ?  to only ask for help when we can't find resolve.

4.)? ? ? ? ?  and, to try to become more like the expectations we have for our leaders.

Perhaps, then, we could begin impacting our world for Christ while allowing our leaders the same privileges we have ... to have a family and a life.

The Storehouse of My Soul

Sandra Lewis Pringle

Within the storehouse of my soul,

are moments I have spent.

Some I have borrowed,

and some, I have lent.

Every passing moment,

no matter how big, or small,

I count them all as treasures,

now that I recount them all.

For, in a passing moment,

I have said "Hello" to a sweet? and precious? friend,

and, yet,

in another passing moment,

I have? tearfully? said "Goodbye",

at the end.

I have taken wrong turns,

only to find this is true;

that someone God had sent my way,

was quickly? passing through.

Each moment, we are touching another,

maybe not side by side;

but we are still in constant contact,

as our souls often do collide.

Those who have passed through Yesterday,

own a special space;

But those whom God still sends our way,

have yet to take that place.

So, let's make the best of every moment,

while we still, yet can;

for every moment is precious,

to every soul, to every man.

Please pray for my mission trip this month,

that God will place me on the right pathways,

with all that is needed.

Thanks,

Sandra

LET THEM SEE YOU

Susan Stevens

Heavenly Father, I??™m coming to You

For only You know what I??™m going through

My mind is in turmoil both day and night

I??™m seeking Your guidance to help me do right

You know all the feelings I try hard to hide

You know the emptiness I feel deep inside

Please help my spirit to be peaceful and still

Let me hear Your voice and know Your will

Heavenly Father, all I can give You is me

Please make my life what You??™d have it be

Use me in any way You think You can

Help me to comfort my fellow man

Help me to look beyond my own pain

And show another what they can gain

If they go to You with all their strife

And let You rule in their heart and life

Thank You for giving my thoughts new form

For staying beside me as I ride out this storm

Thank You for lifting me out of despair

Thank You for all the love You share

One more request while Your face I see

Let my light shine and my love flow free

Let me see others the way that You do

And when they look at me??¦let them see You
