Barbara Weymouth

One day I went for a walk in my neighborhood where I have lived for years.I was walking on

Parchment Lane
and turned right on
Westmore Street
.I started walking down Westmore and to my disbelief everything had changed.I couldn??™t seem to find one familiar sight.

I think I was in shock as I just kept walking in anxious anticipation for something that looked familiar. The houses didn??™t look familiar and none of the people did either.I thought surely I would come upon my friend Kathy??™s house soon, as I always had in the past; but no, her house was not there either.I just kept walking in a fog feeling like an alien in my own neighborhood.

Finally I got to the end of what I thought was

Westmore Street
I decided I would turn right again on to Sangria way.I just knew I would find something familiar there.Well again, none of my friend??™s houses were there.I was beginning to wonder if I would ever find my way back home.So I just kept walking on Sangria looking and hoping. When I got to the end of Sangria I saw my friend Kathy??™s dog Furball walking on the street.I knew that was unusual as Kathy always kept Furball in her fenced yard or on a leash.I was so happy to see Furball his familiar face warmed my heart.By this time I had thought I would never see anything I recognized again.I said, ???Here Furball, come on boy???!And he looked at me like he had never seen me before.I said again, come on Furball it??™s me Angie. He turned and ran away.I thought my heart would surely break.

Well I thought if I just keep walking??¦I just have to find my way back to

Parchment Lane
and back to my home.I finally got to the end of Sangria and again I thought now I will turn right again that will get me home for sure.I hesitantly looked up at the street sign and to my amazement it was
Sycamore Street
.I got so excited I thought I would start to run but I thought I better conserve my energy; in case things went wrong again and I would have to walk a far distance to find my way out of this fog and back to my home.In all my confusion I wasn??™t going to take any chances, none at all!

I started down Sycamore and started looking for my friend??™s houses, because Sycamore was just one block from Parchment where my home was.I was so elated that I could hardly contain myself.I looked to my left and I looked to my right and just as before I could see nothing that looked like it should. My heart began to beat faster and faster and I felt my pulse racing and beads of perspiration began to run down my face.I could not take this madness anymore! How could I just leave my home like I always did and? step into another world?I began to walk faster and faster I just knew I had to get to the end of the block.

Well I finally got to the end of Sycamore and with great hesitation slowly turned to my right, as this should be my street,

Parchment Lane
.I was too afraid to look around as I knew if I didn??™t??™ see anything familiar I would go mad.I walked a few feet looking straight ahead, not looking to the right or left. Then finally I got the courage to look to the right and then to the left.

I thought I saw my friend Sarah??™s blue Corvette in the driveway and I got excited.I began to walk faster and faster.I knew if that was Sarah??™s Blue Corvette that I would be safe and she would help me find my way back home.

? ?

I walked onto her driveway and sure enough it was Sarah??™s car or was it?I ran up to knock on the door and a lady I had never seen before answered the door.I said, "Hi, I??™m Angie is Sarah home"?And the lady said you must be mistaken Sarah passed away twenty years ago.I felt my face grow pale and there was a great sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

I told the lady that I had grown up with Sarah and we were best friends. The lady said, ???Sarah was my Grandmother???.Now I was truly in shock and horror. The lady asked me again what my name was and I said, Angela White. The lady??™s face grew pale and she said, ???It can??™t be, Angela White was killed in a car accident with Grandma Sarah twenty years ago???.I was filled with shock and disbelief. She said, ???Come with me and we??™ll walk down to the cemetery and I will show you; they are buried side by side. But wait a minute isn??™t that Sarah??™s blue corvette in your driveway? The lady said, ???My Momma always said my grandmother always loved? corvettes and for my 40th birthday, I bought myself one, blue, just like Grandma, it??™s a classic!

With total amazement and bewilderment I walked with Sarah??™s granddaughter to the cemetery. When we got there she led me over to where Sarah and Angela??™s graves were.I could not believe my eyes when I saw my name and my birth date on one of the headstones. I felt my knees grow weak and I collapsed onto the ground beside the graves.I fell into a deep slumber. When I woke up and looked around rays of sunshine were shining through the treetops.I rubbed my eyes and I stood up and I began to look all around.Suddenly I saw Sarah at a distance and she was calling my name, ???Angela, Angela, where are you????I was so happy to see her, I called???I??™m over here Sarah??? She came running over to me.She put her arms around me and gave me the biggest hug ever.

I said, ???Sarah, where are we????Sarah said, ???Don??™t you remember we were driving to the country club and my car veered off the road when I was trying to avoid an oncoming car, I couldn??™t turn fast enough and the car hit us head-on we both died that night on the highway. I got that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach again and the memories of that tragic night came rushing back to me.Warm, salty tears began to stream down my face and I said, ???Sarah, I do remember the angels coming and taking us to heaven that night, but what are we doing here now????Sarah said, ???Somehow I had traveled in my spiritual body back to earth and came back to our old neighborhood???.The lady that brought you here was my granddaughter, Katrina, I have never met her before; she brought you back here to find me???.Now take my hand and lets find our way back to heaven. You know Angie until tonight I had only watched my granddaughter from afar, "Katrina" what a pretty name!

You know, Angie ???God gave us both special blessings tonight; you always did love the old neighborhood and I was secretly longing to see my granddaughter face to face.? ?  I think we can both rest in the peace of heaven now.Has it already been twenty years, it seems just like a day.

My Best Halloween Costume

Fred Skill

My best Halloween costume was when I was a senior in high school.?  I was invited to a Halloween party on the Saturday night about five days before Halloween.?  I decided to go as the invisible man, so I dressed up in a black suite with a white shirt and a red tie.?  I wore black gloves and wrapped my head with an ace bandage.?  I had blacken the area around my eyes and mouth and arranged it so there was just a single fold over my mouth so a straw would fit for the anticipated adult beverage, dawned the dark glasses and the black bowler hat at a racy angle and started to go to the party.?  I borrowed the family car a Buick Century as my custom Mercury was a dead give away and people weren??™t supposed to know who you were until the masks came off.?

I left to go to the party and noticed that I needed gas and so I stopped at a gas station on the way to the party.?  This is where I discovered how effective the costume looked.? ?  As you know when you are wearing something you forget how you look as you don??™t see yourself and it is through the reaction of others that you remember what you are wearing.?  Women with a low cut dress probably can relate to that statement.?  Well I pulled into this gas station and rolled down the window (this is the time that they were service stations and they really gave service) a young man came to the window and asked me if I wanted to fill her up with ethyl.?  When I turned from looking at the gas gauge and told him to put in three dollars worth of regular, he gasp, yes sir!?  He put the gas in the car and checked the oil and was washing the windshield and staring at me as he did it and I couldn??™t stop myself from wondering if that is the view that a pretty female receives as she gets her windshield washed, but of course she is used to it and I??™m sure the expression on the attendant would be different.?  He was staring at me like I was a burn victim or something.

When I got to the party I received a lot of attention and a lot of people wanted to talk to me but I wouldn??™t say anything as I didn??™t want to give my identity away so while there were a few that wore masks that hid there identity I was the only one that toward the end of the night that was still a complete stranger to everyone.?  I won the prize for the best costume and was asked to unmask.?

I didn??™t take the mask off but I announced who I was and a lot people were surprised.?  I learned from a lot from the party members they told me they couldn??™t get used to me in that masked state and they acted differently toward me even when they knew who I was, it was an interesting experience to be treated differently because of my looks.?  They stated that because they couldn??™t read my face it made having a discussion with me very strange.?  I never forgot that feeling and tried to learn a lesson from it to not react judgmentally by how a person looks as the person receives a message by your reaction.?

About Me:
Hi, I'm Fred Skill, I was born in Ventura,CA, unlike most of you that were born at avery early age, I was fifteen when I wasborn because we were poor and somebody hadto go to work right away! I don't know if you could call it40 years of experience or one yearsexperience repeated 40 times. Iworked at five different newspapers forthe company and as everything from anadvertising salesman to a publisher. Iwon't go into a run down of my career butthe newspapers were all in California andthelast one was the Record Searchlight inRedding, CA.I am very married to my first wife Carol, and as she puts it also my last wife. Wehave two children a boy and a girl, bothgrown and on their own.My hobbies are computers and `that's agood thing' because I'm the leader for aComputer Users Group. My other interestsinclude wood working, handguns, coins, writing stories and "Honey Do" projects. My wife has a unique way to get me to do aproject. After mentioning it a few times, she will wait until I'm not particularlybusy and ask me where such and such toolis located. I invariably ask, "What doyou need that for?" "Oh, I'm going to(fill in the blank)." Right after I finishthe project it dawns on me that I havebeen had again, but in such a pleasant waythat I don't really mind. And theinteresting thing is she is quite capableof doing whatever job she wants to doherself.I enjoy writing and as Carol passes thecomputer room she will hear me chucklingand know that I at it again. You see whenI write I tickle myself and it isdifficult to write and kiss the back ofyour hand at the same time, but I do finda way. Most of my writings are letters tomy brother-in-law about the daily thingsthat happen and to make them interesting Ido try to add a little humor, I hope youfind them interesting.

The Real Story Of Halloween

Richard Sims

Most of the stories that you have heard about Halloween are just made up through

the years to impress our children and keep them from being scared to death on

Halloween night, but now you are going to hear the real story of Halloween.

Every year on the 31st of Oct. is what is known as the night of the living dead, the night?

the gates of hell are opened to release all of the evil spirits to walk the earth in search

of a body to host their lost spirits.?  The spirits roam the earth from dusk on Halloween

night to , after they are forced back through the gates of hell unless

they have found a body.

It is believed that you must dress up in a very fright full? costume on Halloween night to

scare the evil spirits away, to keep them from inhabiting your body on this very gloomy

and scary night. The part about passing out candy at all of the door steps on Halloween

night is to reward the good spirits for their part in scaring away all of the evil spirits.

On the night of Oct. 31st. when your door bell rings and you hear those little voices

scream out trick or treat reward them handsomely with all kinds of goodies, remember

to call them my little purities and don't let them see that wart on your nose. Wishing

you all a ghostly Halloween!!!

It??™s Halloween

Dianna Doles Petry

Ghosts and goblins rule the night,

When people close their eyes to sleep.

Gremlins taunt and witches tease,

Rules aren't made for them to keep.

You can run but you can't hide from them,

Your evasive moves are all in vain.

They mingle with children seeking treats,

They're free to roam the streets again!

Shrieks and moans fill the dark of night,

Do we dare to believe this could be true?

Don't take for granted that it's only a mask,

It might be the Reaper? waiting for you!

Who is the Hoot

Norma Liles

?  Who is the hoot the owl cries
?  You know the Who the Who who hoots
?  Hoots and hollers screams and cries
?  My nerves are a wreck, I think I'll hide.

?  Bones a creakin' do you hear?
?  Hear them rattle, hear them click
?  Sounds like drums inside your head
?  Gosh all mighty, whose under the bed?

?  Ghosts and goblins fill the air
?  Spider's webs drip across the trees
?  Witches are flying across the dark skies
?  Their cauldrons are full of snakes & snails.

?  This is the night that the ghosts come alive
?  This is the night when Paul Revere rides
?  Headless women roam through the woods
?  Hey everyone, IT'S HALLOWEEN NIGHT!

Dark evening shadows lengthen

The moon hides behind a cloud

Visions of witches and goblins

Soak into my nighttime dreams.

Dragons of days gone by

Rise up from their swampy sleep

They ravage the earth with

Their talons of fire and brimstone.

Ghost of another world

Appear as if they were real

Dripping dried bloody mouths

Their eyes devoid of eyeballs.

Wolves scream and holler

Mountain cats prowl here and there

Sheep hide among the trees

HALLOWEEN TIME IS HERE!!!
