Special Treat ??“ From Me

Carol Roach M.Ed

As I sit here in my living room, I see the television set which is a blessing for me. Yes a blessing. Up until last month we had only one station to watch.I could not afford to have more. The reception was horrible with snowy, wavy lines running through the picture and a big border line hiccupping up and down. The sound was scratchy and grating upon the eardrum. We did our best to position the wire so that we could get the best reception possible, sometimes it worked sometimes it didn??™t.Today we have cable and the reception is wonderful. It is so nice to be able to watch TV again.

We got the cable for Darla. We were so happy when she came to live with us.We moved into this place in September. But I couldn??™t afford cable then.I promised Darla once the bills would be brought up to date that we would get cable.I knew she was bored with only one channel to look at.

My son and I had our own computer. We opted for a second computer over the expense of having cable. That was before Darla came to live with us.When she came there was not much for her to do.I shared my computer with her, but she was too shy to ask for it. She felt she was imposing.I promised her I would get cable the first opportunity that I could see my way through. We got the cable in December. She moved out in December as well.

I see the green entertainment center that the television is sitting in.It is a modern design with a smoke glass cabinet where we keep DVD??™s.Darla bought it for me the month she moved it.The entertainment center matched the colours of the living room walls. That is why she bought it.

I look around and see the green couch and cherry wood coffee table. She bought that for me as well.Everywhere I look is a painful reminder of her.She left her signature all over my house.

Pictures of Darla and her children are still hanging on my wall.Half of my kitchen accessories were given to me by her, right down the two spice racks. The little knickknacks in the bathroom came from her.My red comforter and matching doll and dollies were gifts from her.

But her presence is the greatest in the living room where I spend most of my time on my computer. When I look straight ahead from my computer, I see the window leading onto the street; the blind is down now for it is early morning. The blind is also dark green to match the walls.I bought the blind for the window, but it was Darla who hung it up for me. Who would have thought that a single blind would be the cause of her leaving?

The day she left, Darla and my son had an argument over whether on not the blind should be pulled up or left down.It was a stupid fight and tempers clashed.Darla packed her belongings and said she was leaving. She had no where to go and my son said he did not want her to leave that way. They worked it out, they both calmed down and she cooked his favourite supper for him. That night she went to the hospital because of an infection from the operation she had the week before. It was the last time we would see her.Her friend called a week later to say she was moving out.Darla came and collected her stuff and off she went.

Beyond the window is my tiny front yard.Darla was going to plant flowers for me this summer. The yard is presently covered in snow. The snow is cold, as cold as my heart feels without my Darla. Once the snow is gone and the spring arrives there will be no one to plant flowers for me. My wild flower has moved on.
