Everyone needs to be brought back home

Sharon Bryant

My father used to always say, "Everyone needs to be brought back home."?  All my life I've wondered exactly what he meant when he used to say that.?  While preparing his funeral last week, I believe I have found the answer.

Unknown to my brother, sister and I, there was a large cardboard box that dad had kept hidden from us.?  We found it when we were trying to find his military records for his funeral.?

Inside the box is fifteen black and white 8 x 10 photos of soldiers from WWII.?  Their names are on the photos and the years they served.?

My brother and sister and I sat down trying to figure out why dad would have had these photos.?  And then we remembered his saying, "Everyone needs to be brought back home."?  We believe these are soldiers who did not make it back home during WWII.

We believe dad was bringing them back home.?  We think his goal was to one day find the families of these soldiers and give the photos to those families.

We are now trying to do that.?  Since I aired my project "Operation We Care" a few months back on radio, I have contacted the Veteran's station to see if they can help me.?  I have requested that the names of the soldiers be aired hoping that? a son or daughter or grandchildren of these soldiers will be found.?  We will then mail the photo to them.

My father pulled the wounded off the front lines in Germany and France.?  Just a week and a half ago I was watching the news with him when something about Iraq came on.?  He said, "I know all about war.?  I can't begin to count the bridges we burned after we crossed them."?

I do recall dad talking about an old Army buddy named Herman.?  One of these photos has the name Herman and the last name on it.?  I can only pray that with God's help, my siblings and I can fulfill the dream we believe dad had to return these soldiers home.

Then, they will finally be brought back home.
