Ashley

Nanci Stroupe

Ashley moved in with us when she was about 15 months old. Her Mother went back to school so she would be able to raise Ashley with help from her Father, who was in the Service.

When her Mom went to work, I would watch Ashley, or I should say I would play with Ashley and be astonished at the rate she was learning. She wanted to read from the first time her Mother read her a book and then Papa and I would read to her during the day and always at bedtime. She would take the book away from me and pretend to read it to me.?  She knew most of them by heart.

By the time she started talking real well. She would say, me read now, Noni, me read now, and I would go along with her until she became a little irritated because she wanted to really read. And she said so. Quite adamantly.?

Finally I decided to make Ashley a book that she could read. Something like our? old Dick and Jane books but I used words she was familiar with.?  She knew her name, she knew Dog, cat, Mommie, Papa, Noni, Aunt Sherry.?  In fact there were quite a few words that she recognized by sight and she learned so quickly.?

Finally the book was finished. I put a cover on it, named it and all.?  She read that book word for word and carried it around until I was afraid it was coming apart.?

I scotch-taped it and I was impressed by this child reading at such a young age.?  No one else was quite as impressed as I was but what the heck, I am her grandmother.?  She named me Noni, and way later we found out Noni is the Italian word for Grandma. I am Italian and I didn't even know that. And yes, she grew up to be a very tenacious reader and on the honor roll every year.

The future looks bright for Ashley who can do so many things and do them well.

A Lost Penny

B.J. Cassady

When I see a penny on the ground, I notice many people
who walk around it.?  I think of the penny not unlike my soul
I wish it to be found and treasured so.?  I pick up the penny so
I can be a bit richer than I was a few moments ago.

This is how God works in his wondrous ways, he seeks a lost
soul and picks it up to save.?  Who or what is better off the
penny or the man who finds it??  I cannot say but for me, I will
take the discarded and save it for another day.
As I know my God will do with me someday.

BJ Cassady

Guthrie, Oklahoma

Nobody said life was going to be easy.
Nobody said life was going to be fair.
Somebody said life was worth living.
Somebody said life was worth experiencing.
I found out that life is about joy and happiness.
I found out that along the way you have tears
and laughter.
I found out that the small things are important.
I discovered the better part of me.
I discovered all this when I prayed to Him.

You Can

Joyce C. Lock

When the silence is deafening and

you think you can't stand it any more ...

Listen to your favorite Christian music

or, maybe, turn on a religion channel;

focusing on things that are lovely.

When the nights are so cold

you think you'll never be warm again,
Turn on a heating blanket

and? curl up with God's Word.

When legalities become so overwhelming

you feel buried under the load,
Find another way.

(My yoke is easy, my burden light.)

When days are ruff? and

you think you can't go on,
Just take it one step at a time.

God requires nothing more of you

than to walk humbly with Him.

When? you finally admit that? you can't ...
You'll? find that, with God,? you can.

God must have a lot of faith in you!

Your Best Friend

Joyce C. Lock

When you've lost everything that your whole life you did win,
And there's no way you can begin to pick up again;

There's only one way to take control of your life
And be victorious over all of the strife.

Give your heart to Jesus.?  Just give your whole life to Him.
All He ever wanted was to be your best friend.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me;
for I am meek and lowly in heart:
and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Matthew 11:29

You are Loved

Joyce. C. Lock

May God reach down
and love you,
in His own special way.

May you know
you are loved,
each? and every day.

May you see,
from God's dear eyes,
the value of your worth.

May His love show you
the most precious things
on this earth.
