The Leprechaun

Dianna Doles Petry

I looked for the Leprechaun on a starry night,

I wondered if he was really all that sprite,

I saw him nippin' from his whiskey flask,

Maybe now was the time to complete my task.

I'd sneak right up and grab him there,

I was thinking that it didn't seem quite fair,

Then I saw the mischief in his red face,

As he started to run all over the place.

With each sip of his mountain dew,

He yelled, "I can run all night! Can you?"

But as the juice started to slow down the elf,

I grabbed his green jacket and smiled to myself.

"So you got me now, oh, what will I do?"

"Shall I dance a jig or just sing for you?

He tipped his cap and he danced all around,

Ran like greased lightening when he hit the ground.

I'd been outwitted by a Leprechaun that day,

I wanted some gold but he just wanted to play.

So I thought I'd stop with something pleasant to say,

Please have a very Happy St. Patrick's Day!
