Tax Time

 Sharon Bryant

I don't know about you, but I hate doing my taxes.  Maybe because I'm self employed and I have to go through so many categories.

I swore to myself I would have this done in January.  I lied.  So here I am with just a matter of days until that dreaded deadline and I'm working like a fiend sorting, stacking, totaling, itemizing, and wondering how bad the end results are going to be.

Hubby was helping me sort receipts today.  He disappeared for a few minutes and when he entered the room, an old familiar tune came out of the stereo.  "Soldier Boy."  How well I remember that song.  Soon, I found myself singing along to the song, remembering in high school when the song was a hit.

Next came "Under the Boardwalk."  Another one I always liked and I began singing along to that one also.

"Purple People Eater" (I believe was the title) and I began laughing at the crazy words I used to sing as a teenager.

Doing the taxes wasn't so bad after all, not with such great songs to sing along with and memories flooding your mind.

I worked all day on taxes today, listening to old tunes from the 60's.  I'll finish up tomorrow but tomorrow is Country Western Day.

I'll sing along with Patsy when she sings "Crazy", and I'll remember that hunk from long ago who made the movie Rebel Without a Cause.

"Wabash Cannonball" will belt out of the stereo tomorrow.  How many times grandma used to listen to that and sing it, I can't count.

So if you're stressed out and have waited until the last minute to do your taxes, turn on the radio to the oldies or an old country station.  Or if you have some old cassettes hidden away that you haven't listened to in ages, get them out and I bet you'll be grinning away and the stress level will lessen.  Nothing like running a ten-key adding machine with your toes tapping!
