The Plastic Tree

by

Magdalena James

Momma never complained too much, so I s'ppose I shouldn't complain neither, but that don't change the facts; and the facts is that the plastic ribbons in our tree out front is starting to bug me.

The kids on the bus are calling our house "the house with the red tree". It ain't a problem. I've helped Momma tie 'em on a few times myself. Been doin' it for years ever since I could ‘member.

There's white ones for the easy times like when Mamma and me are watching TV all night and the show is really good. Momma says that white’s for angels and the white plastic ribbons is for me.

There's the blue ones. Not too many a’those. Mamma says the blue ones are for the quiet days when Daddy’s out with the boys and a ‘hooping it up. There's green ones, but we only put them out ‘cause we ran outta’ blue ones one day. I try to make sure those are tied on the front of the tree so it don't look like it's all just one color all the time like the kids on the bus says it is.

Daddy cut loose on Mamma again last night so she's waitin’ for the bus to pick me up ‘fore she comes out to tie on a red one. She don't complain much, so I suppose I shouldn't complain neither, but when I grow up, I'm gonna’ have a tree just like this one no matter what the kids says’ about it, 'cept I think mine is gonna’ to be out back instead.
